Yes, you miss out, but to me it’s not that big of a deal. I rather be on the top level of the podium in real life than be level 50 on Zwift. That is just me though. I think 15$ a month for 5 or so races/all out workouts is well worth it. I cut my Strava membership and just used those funds for Zwift.
Just started using zwift after using trainer road for the last year or so and zwift makes intervals and finishing the workouts so much easier mentally because you are rewarded with going faster, even if it’s virtually, when you put out the power. And the training peaks integration is excellent. Really hope TR could do this. They could integrate the group workouts even. @Nate_Pearson
This would be an excellent strategic partnership if they could get API’s that work cross platform so that you could access TrainerRoad in the Zwift training screen. I know Zwift is about to launch a UI overhaul and I don’t know what all that includes but I’m sure they are aware their training materials are not competitive to platforms like TrainerRoad or even Sufferfest. Having some kind of combined membership option could be really cool as well and I would imagine could increase membership on both platforms by creating a much easier way for people to take advantage of two of the most popular indoor riding platforms. I am 100% sure it wouldn’t be easy, but it is certainly possible if the right people were to talk and commit to contributing equally towards making it successful.
I think you guys are barking up the wrong tree. The way I see it, I think Zwift has a lot more to lose than TrainerRoad. Zwift is trying to get their workouts in there and have serious training happening on their platform, meanwhile, TrainerRoad is not in the business of the making entertainment for their users. TrainerRoad only wants to make me faster.
For Zwift to allow this, would mean that they risk some people jumping ship and heading to TR and the same for TR (although I see this happening less since TR members often experience Zwift before ending here)
I also want to address the comments with regards to TrainingPeaks. TrainingPeaks is not in the same business as TrainerRoad or Zwift. TrainingPeaks does not control your trainer, they are more of a coach/analysis site than anything else. It seems to me that this is why they partner with Zwift.
Just my opinion… I dont think it will happen.
Lets not confuse the Training Peaks integration. This connection, as with Todays Plan makes perfect sense. They are not competing in the same space and have very different models.
TrainerRoad and to that end Sufferfest, Rouvy, RGT, FulGaz all appear in the same market as Zwift. They control the trainers or provide the platform for indoor training. I see no reason of any of these to strike a deal any time soon.
- Zwift already has direct workout integration established with Training Peaks, Xert, Today’s Plan (and others?). So this “risk” you allude to is currently in place with at least three outside partners.
- Adding TR to that list of integration to Z would maybe be more risk for Z, since TR is a large piece of the pie, but it’s not like this is some new concept for Z.
I’ve been using Zwift the last week. Tried it previously in early 2019 as a standalone but it was too much Z2 and noodling without much focus and chasing the challenges
This time i wanted to use concurrently but there are no ANT+ in the world and so i read that i could use my bike Power meter (stages L only) for Zwift, Wahoo kickr for TR could work which it does. However, even with calibration they have quite different readings which is odd. I disregard the Zwift workout and save the TR for Trainingpeaks. Zwift is a little gimmicky but it does take away the indoor environment which hasnt been an issue last 4-5 months of indoor training as watch Netflix but moving from SSB to more intense workouts i cant properly watch a programme. I also might as well since its not a huge amount per month and will only keep it until i’m free again! Might as well start getting XP to level up etc, and you never know if this continues might dabble in some Zwift racing since that is the only form in the foreseeable future.
Hopefully can get some ANT+ to use Kickr for both.
Is this correct @Nate_Pearson?
Would love a TR only race on zwift.
Zwift is a game. TR is trainongssoftware. Why would you want both? Oh … wait
I actually have been using both together.
TR on android phone, Zwift on iPad, music on radio.
Works great … in 2 free month trial period i got to level 18. TR for training and after the TR workout stopped i would continue in Zwift until I finished the zwift route or the target distance for that day. More motivational than the “extend cooldown”.
And if I first stop my TR workout (automatically to Strava) then my Zwift workout is automatically not synched to Strava. I don’t care about losing the extra miles…
I’ll pile on here, I would love to see TR workouts as an API extension into Zwift, or via TrainingPeaks. I get the issues with that, but I can’t help thinking how useful it would be.
For me zwift is super motivating. Three TR workouts per week and easier aerobic rides on zwift 2-3x/wk. Today I reached level 49 on a 4 hour ride (the mega pretzel).
Been using both together for several years now. I occasionally free ride Zwift or do a race but 90% of my rides on the trainer are TR running the workout and Zwift in the background.
I find using them together very motivating. Primarily I’m focused on moving through the TR plans and I’m definitely structure first. At the same time I have to admit I find gaining XP and completing events/routes on Zwift to be be motivating as well.
I recently completed the tour of Watopia while working though my TR plan and I really enjoyed it. Got double XP, rode with some huge groups, and stayed on course with my TR plan. Win-win.
I know they compete for the same customers, but personally I feel like they complement each other more then they compete.
This old chestnut!
I’ve used both, like almost everybody.
For me the ultimate would be trainerroads plans on zwift. If you have the time and inclination you could actually achieve exactly this using Zwift’s custom workout feature, as I suspect many have already done.
Anywho, I’d say there’s a helluva lot more chance that zwift will eventually drastically improve their training plans and individual workouts than there is of any TR integration and when that happens, as much as many on here might hate to admit it, a lot of paying customers are gonna call it a day on TR and other platforms and head straight to Zwift for a one-stop-shop of social, races, training and of course visual stimulation.
Some have, and it happens to be a violation of the TrainerRoad Terms and Conditions to do so. As such, not a great idea to suggest or do.
Just something to add to the whole “let’s just put TR on zwift” thing. That would be all well and good if TR were just the workouts/plans but they’re clearly much more than that. With the plan builder, group workouts, analysis stuff they’ve built in, plus what they have planned, they are not just a training plan company and there’s more growth in making the software better than just being a plan vendor.
As I see it, this is a first-world problem. Folks who want the visual entertainment can run zwift alongside TR, like I do, and if you don’t like paying for both then you need to make a decision of what really matters: the training or the eye candy. Frankly, to expect TR to just put aside their own growth and development roadmap to satisfy a desire by some of us to integrate is a little selfish and shortsighted.
For the longest time I hemmed and hawed about paying the $15 for Zwift and $99/yr for TR (grandfathered). Then I thought about it… I spend roughly 30 hours a month on the trainer, TR costs ~$8/mo, so I’m paying $23/month for indoor training software… or about $0.75/hr.
Meanwhile, I’m speccing out my Cannondale SuperSix Evo Hi-Mod Ultegra Di2 every night and searching Craig’s List for $3000 used road bike deals.
