2nd toes on both feet sore after riding

Hi all

The second/long toe on both my feet (2nd from big toe) get sore and tender after rides over an hour long. Do you all think this is a shoe size issue? Anyone else have the same problem?

Thanks!

I don’t have anything to offer, but I have the same issue. It happened pretty abruptly last fall after the big sugar race. Same shoes I have always had. Left is much worse than the right. I got refitted on the bike, which helped but it is still there after 30 minutes. Just got some new insoles hoping they will help out.

Yeah that’s the same with me! Started happening last fall and more on the left than right. What insoles did you get?

I ended up getting the solestar insoles just because my bike fitter gets a pro deal with them. But the progression of the discomfort goes from an ache, to pretty bad discomfort, and eventually numbness with pain. Meaning the toe hurts, but I could literally stab it with a knife, and I wouldn’t feel it. Almost wondering if I have an undiagnosed Morton’s neuroma.

I would also suggest insoles. Longer rides my feet want to flatten out and move forward in my shoes. I use G8’s. Solved the problem.

Any seat height or chamois changes? Different pain left to right could indicate seat position or height.

I didn’t quite have this but found I was clenching my toes when riding. Issue was solved by a proper bike fit, Sidas insoles and my being a bit more conscious to relax. My inexpert view is that if I’m consciously trying to pedal efficiently and my shoes have a bit too much vertical room in the toe box then I’m clawing at the ground as it were. Bikefit, insoles and a bit of conscious attention to it seem to have eased it up.

No seat height changes and I’m still using the same chamois.

Have you talked to a podiatrist? I had a neuroma in my left foot with similar symptoms. A few cortisone injections really seemed to help.

That is going to be my next step if the insoles don’t work. It seems by your statement that the cortisone injections were a permanent fix. Is that a safe assumption?

Per my podiatrist, the injections can be a permanent fix. He mentioned he had a neuroma himself and the injection worked.

He mentioned it may take a few injections, a different type of cortisone, or surgery to ultimately fix it, depending on the person and severity.

Good luck!

Yes, thank you for your input. I was always under the assumption that the injections end up being a bandaid. It is good to know that there is a possibility of it being cured without surgery.

Hi all

I ended up getting a pair of Lake CX203 wides and they definitely feel better on my toes, however my arch gets pretty sore after about an hour on the bike. I’m thinking I may need some sort of insole with arch support, any recommendations on brand/type? I have a pair of superfeet insoles I can use, but not sure how they’d hold up in cycling shoes.

Thanks!

The Specialized Body Geometry SL footbeds have worked well for me. I went with the middle level (blue).
