3 to 4 week injury - how should I progress

Hi there,
I was working through a great programme and getting done good gains, when I came off my MTB and suffered a concussion. My buddy is a bit of a mess, but nothing broken and I’m resting as much as possible.
I’m hoping to restart training in 3-4 weeks and was wondering, should I just rely on the adaptations and pick up where the programme tells me or start afresh?
Trading for a 4 day stage race in June.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, sorry that your first post is under these circumstances.

There are return to sport protocols out there for those who have suffered concussions. These follow a graduated approach where you have to monitor for symptoms. If you follow such a protocol it won’t have you dive back in to your plan and my own concussion experience was that I very much had to take it day by day when I got back to riding.

Welcome to the TR community! Sorry to hear about your crash.

As @Scheherazade mentioned, coming back from a concussion is usually a day-to-day kind of return to exercise. It can vary from person to person, and even from accident to accident if the same person gets a concussion multiple times.

Adaptive Training will lower the difficulty of your workouts due to the time off, so you could get back into your original plan once you feel up to it. Don’t feel the need to rush, though! This is definitely something you want to take as much time as you need to get back to 100%.

If your plan picks back up in a sort of awkward spot that you don’t think would benefit you (such as the final week of a Build Phase block after you’ve skipped the previous few weeks of training), then it may be worth scrapping your current plan and starting anew so you can build back up.

We’d advise erring on the side of caution with concussions. I hope your recovery goes smoothly and you’re back on the bike soon, though!
