5hr solo century attempt: the return

I rode 70 miles in 4 hours on Saturday. I went through six(!!) 750ml bottles in those 4 hours. And I was still dehydrated when I returned.

I live in Chicago. It was 90F and 80% humidity. I sweat a lot.

Where in the world do you live where you can get away with 2 bottles in 5 hours??? Forget “conventional wisdom” - I would literally have expired…

I’ll speak for myself here, I’m in MA and I started the ride when it was 58 degrees and by the end of the ride was upper 70’s. Any other weekend (like this past weekend we got up to about 90) might have been a different story!

I drink a liter an hour easily, I’m in south Florida. I couldn’t imagine a 3 hour ride with 2 bottles

I’m in the UK (northwest). It’s basically never really hot here. A really good summer day would be 25 C / 77F, but anything over 20 C/68 F is considered “hot”. There might be two days a year where it hits 30 C.

I’m up in the northern burbs……I rode 130 miles on Sat, 50 w/ my usual Sat group and 80 solo. I think I had 4 750ml bottles of energy drink (Infinit and then Gatorade at gas stations) and maybe 1 bottle of water. Oh, and 2 Cokes at stops.

For me, that was a lot of liquids….felt great the whole ride. Fueled more than normal (tried to get one food item / hour in). Woulda gone for 150, but I was nursing a slow leak and had run out of CO2.

Great work! I did the same thing this weekend and made a Father’s Day visit out of it . I stopped at my step dad’s house for an hour and some lunch, but that was kind of the point of the ride. I spent a lot of time in puppy paws and the drops when not climbing. I’ve also taught myself to head into the short, punchy climbs in the drops. It really helps save momentum for me!

Thanks! I am so happy with the ride and my power, especially with a fair bit of climbing too. It was an awesome day on the bike.

I live about 45 minutes north of the city and lately I’ve been having to drink about two bottles every sixty minutes to even stand a chance. Even then though I’m still dropping a ton of water weight every ride. The weather is definitely looking up this week though.

@hubcyclist Dang it! Missed not knowing you were riding, I could have cheered you on from my little ones softball game in tiverton (twas our away game)! Our dug out was right next to Main Road…funny thing at one point my wife told me to stop paying attention (i kept score) to superbike passing by!

ha, well if it was a superbike it def wasn’t me on my entry level Allez! i always tell myself i ought to stop around the four corners area, i think there’s some bakery/cafe there but I always keep riding. We do go to sakonnet vineyard for wine though!

Ok to be fair - any roadbike is a superbike in my eyes! You should definitely stop at Groundswell at Four Corners. Went there this weekend for first time after softball… It was great. Lots of outdoor sitting for the bike, and then quick cross the road for ice cream at grays. Havent ridden there in a while (only around Aquidneck Island or trainer lately)

Is temperature envy a thing? If it is, I definitely have it. I’ve been doing three to five hour rides with the temp pegged somewhere between 95 and 100 Fahrenheit. Just recently I started freezing all but one of my bottles that I take with me and that has been a lifesaver.
And yes, I do have a reason for doing that, it’s for a 150 mi race at the end of July, but that doesn’t make it any easier lol. I think I remember what 58° feels like…
