AI detection vs 8-minute test

Hi,

I tested a day before my scheduled AI detection. The test is lower(20watts) than the AI detection.

Do you normally just take take the AI vs the 8 minute test?

I’d guess the AI test is more accurate because it has evaluated all the workouts in the past 2
20-25 days right?
Thoughts?

Hey @PedallingSlow

I’d probably take the AI FTP Detection number!

AI FTP Detection has more data to work with as it analyzes millions of rides, to understand how FTP changes over time and in response to training.

You could have well underperformed in the 8-minute test due to pacing, fatigue, or mental factors. Lots of things can affect you on test day.

I tried an 8 min test once ftp was nearly 20 higher - it was wrong, AI all the way

I’ll take the AI detection then. Not only is it more accurate, its also higher. Win-win for me

Either just trust in the Ai solution. The workouts are a combination of FTP and PLs so a spot on FTP may not be essential.

If you really really want to test your FTP, do a long form test - 30-45 minutes+. Or a 2x20minute effort with a short rest taking the average power.

An 8 minute effort involves too much interpretation regarding one’s anaerobic capacity. If one is a great sprinter, they can game an 8 minute effort towards a way too optimistic FTP.

It’s only a win if you can actually do the workouts at the higher FTP!

Good point. I’m totally ok lowering it. AI raised my FTP by 5% so no big deal if I just stay with my old FTP. I can use that for my “extensive” workouts.
