Anyone using a Whoop?

I had one problem a long while ago, where it lost connection. The only way to restore it was to first let the band run completely out of battery - so took a few days.

This was advised by support.

Has anyone received their Whoop 4.0 yet? If so, care to comment on how it compares to the 3.0?

I think they are due to ship as from tomorrow.

I am waiting for DC Rainmaker’s review before I commit to XX months. Have my 3.0 on a month by month atm.

Very curious if the 4.0 will do more continuous HRV monitoring during sleep

I’m curious, what do you expect to get from continuous HRV monitoring?

Continuous may have been the wrong word choice. I’d like multiple sample points throughout the night, say every 15 minutes

This paints a clearer picture of recovery and more easily identifies errant data. A single sample, as they currently do, is much more likely to produce very high variance night to night. More data is better

My understanding is that it’s a weighted dynamic average, not a single sample, which wouldn’t make a whole lotta sense because HRV is highly variable—you sigh and it doubles!

I’m excited they added the temperature sensor because it’ll most likely increase the accuracy of HRV. The strap will know when your body temperature minimum is and therefore where you are in your circadian cycle.

As far as I understand they are collecting many HRVs but in analysing the sleap they use avg of last 5min of the deep sleep as a HRV which is shown and used to calculate recovery

They’ve changed that earlier this past summer to use the full night’s worth of data.

At best, I’m a “fitness fanatic,” an average person, not in the best of condition worldwide, I still enjoy a number of cocktails several nights a week. But you’re right, it’s for a consumer base niche-driven.

Nevertheless, Whoop got me to push myself and adapt some behavioral things on the basis of tangible insight (need to drink less because it has a negative impact on X sleep, need to take or read more magnesium/Melatonin or it has a positive impact on sleep, X) and work harder on green days and ease on red days.

I was unaware of this change - that is a much better methodology.

I still wish they’d show us those data points, but taking the average overnight is a big step in the right direction

Have you got ur 4.0 already or still waiting ?

I’ve been wearing the Oura and Whoop together for a few weeks now too. So far I’ve found RHR, HRV, Respiratory Rate, Sleep duration, Light Sleep, and Awake time all track VERY closely. The actual values differ (for example Whoop consistently gives me a higher RHR by 1-2 BPMs) but plotting the values on a graph it’s clear the trends are nearly identical.

Deep sleep and REM sleep are all over the place for both devices and I have hunch neither of them are very accurate nor consistent.

I tend to prefer the Oura recovery score over Whoop’s, mainly because of the mental impact but also because of how they’re derived. Oura’s recovery score is less “in your face” and also seems to be derived from more inputs (or maybe the weighting of inputs is more even) compared to whoop. I get a lot of red and yellow scores from whoop on days that I feel good/great and this tends to have a slight negative mental impact.

I find Oura to be more consistent in the data provided. I’ve had a few days where Whoop has given me some strange reading (e.g. way too low or high HRV). I understand Whoop recently released a firmware update that may fix these issues, but too early for me to tell.

Ring vs wrist strap is personal preference and I don’t mind either. If I was forced to choose one moving forward I’d give the slight edge to wrist strap since the ring can get in the way of daily activities.

Right now I prefer Oura but I’m hopeful for Whoop 4.0. Some of the new features are enticing and perhaps the new hardware will help with data accuracy/consistency. I REALLY wish Whoop wouldn’t prioritize their recovery score as much as they do. Either make it more subtle with a UI update or feed the score more metrics other than HRV (literally the HRV plot and recovery plot are identical). It’s easy to say just look at the raw data but harder to do in practice when that score is screaming out at you. If they fixed that I’d be all in on Whoop.

I’d never heard of Oura before today - the idea of having it in a ring seems genius to me, I hate the idea of wearing a wrist strap as well as my watch.

Also it seems like it’d be easier to keep under a ring properly clean than under a strap (i.e. my wedding ring which has never given me any issues, vs my watch which I have to leave off for a day or so every now and then as I start to get itchy).

I’m quite tempted by Oura, but might see how Whoop 4.0 comes up once the reviews start to roll in.

Another thing Whoop have going for them is the subscription pricing model, as being in the sunlit uplands of post-brexit Britain it’ll cost me a great deal in tax and import fees to import an Oura.

Reboot from the menu in the app. Cured a recharge and drain issue I was having as well.

Has anyone got 4.0?

Yes, got mine on Tuesday. Too early to report on accuracy; I’ve only done some indoor steady rides so far. Overall, 4.0 is slightly better in a few ways. The smaller size is nice, the new charger (wireless and waterproof) is better. Don’t know if I’ll use sp02 or skin temp yet. For me, if the HR accuracy improves both in workouts and during the day, I’ll be happy. I have some vo2 this weekend so that will be a good chance to check. It is a significantly different LED setup so I’m hopeful.

Now we need to get whoop to open an API so TR can pull recovery and strain data into AT.

Just got an email over the weekend saying that mine will be even further delayed from the 6-8 weeks they initially told me

Curious how they are prioritizing shipping them out. I’d assume based on length of time you’ve been a customer and length of time you’ve already paid for in the future, but that’s a total guess

I got an email back on 19-Oct-21 that said my Whoop was leaving the factory and that it would ship in 10ish days - so maybe this week or next
