Apple AirTag as a theft/robbery tracking device?

Wait, don’t we want them to drop the bike and run away?

I see what you did there

If it helps on range: the last time I flew with my roadbike, I tagged it with a tile under the seat so that I could track it and make sure it made it onto my flight. Rough estimate is that range, inside a bike case, was at least 100 feet. Estimate is from when I saw the luggage truck approach the airplane and when the tile was picked up by my phone.

This system worked really well. It also let me know when my bike was unloaded when we landed, and when it was in the vicinity of the baggage are.

Isn’t that the desired outcome? I’d prefer they drop the bike, run away, and then I come reclaim my newly located bike ,thanks to the thieves own phone. Much cleaner than finding the thief with the bike, and the resulting mayhem!

Thanks I was going to look up FCC filings but it was a busy day. My use case is cat rustling at night, and 30-50 feet is reasonable range walking around our yard or up and down the street. Will switch if it solves the Tile app’s long delay to find, range is acceptable, and the distance/direction works as advertised.

Just tested with an IP11 and a new Airpod… 20ft open ; 15ft with a solid door detection range. Inside of that, the compass works quite nice.

Just received mine. Put it in the backyard where the cat often hides in small shrubbery. Waited 10 minutes with phone in garage, inside metal box.

iPhone SE2 found it from about 60’ away. Verified distance with my 25’ tape measure.

Cat antenna/dish

yep.

Compared to Tile Mate, my iPhone SE2 located the AirTag quicker than Tile app. First test and I’m seeing 60’ range, and it actually provided approximate location even with an SE2 which doesn’t support UWB. Interested to see what happens when we use my wife’s IP11.

No kidding. This whole thread I’m thinking “what are you going to do when you locate your bike?” Maybe the police in your area are responsive to bike theft but here it’s like pulling teeth to get them to come when a stolen bike is located. And then you have to prove that the stolen item belongs to you, which is trickier than it sounds.

Seems like this could be a good solution for pet owners.

GPLama has a pretty good video about his experiences / tests with the AirTags.

Where exactly are you planning to insert it? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Ahh on the collar. I don’t have any pets fyi.

I didn’t understand what he was getting at with the luggage handler being alerted that your bag had a tag in it. That wouldn’t happen unless you tagged it as lost, would it? Or did I misunderstand his point?

You could put it in the saddle bag. It isn’t as great as putting it somewhere inside the frame, but it should do the trick.

Right, but is it saying it would notify the luggage handler? I would not expect that. I mean, I don’t want my phone going off every time I pass a tag…just the ones that have been marked lost.

If the luggage handler has an iphone and is traveling along with your luggage then he might get alerted. I doubt this is a real scenario. Isn’t most luggage going up and down conveyor belts and into the truck you see them loading from?

Just passing a tag would generate a location of the tag. If your friend leaves their keys in your car with their Airtag attached, then at some point you’d get an alert telling you that an Airtag was travelling with you. Similarly, the thief that stole your bike might get that notification as well.

Someone mentioned putting it under the bartape. That seems like a good location. Someone needs to design Airtag compatible handlebar plugs!

I guess I just don’t understand. I mean, I can envision a scenario where 20% of travelers put an air tag in their luggage just in case it gets lost. Is this guy’s iPhone buzzing every 5th bag he handles just because he happens to have a job that puts him near a lot of suitcases?
