Apple AirTag as a theft/robbery tracking device?

It looked way too big to fit under bar tape.

No, the tag has to “travel” with him - probably for some distance and time. But all those bags might ping their location off of the guy’s phone.

I’m guessing that one could also turn off all the AirTag stuff on their own phone if they don’t want to be bothered.

I love this. I think I’m gonna order 8 of them. 4 for all the bikes in our house including kids bikes which have the highest chance of getting lost. And a couple to track the kids themselves.

The AirTag would have to travel with luggage handler for a period of time (which would be an expected scenario given their job), but for them to be alerted (on an iPhone) it needs to be with them when they return to their ‘Home’ location (or a nominated frequent location… which is vague AF… does a nominated ‘Home’ override a frequent location, etc. etc)

In short, the luggage handler won’t be alerted on their iPhone.

I’ve done a ton of follow up testing on these I might put in another video. I can confirm it tracks cars very well.

Correct AND they’ll need to return ‘Home’ to trigger the “You’re being stalked” alert.

I have about a 50% success rate with the alert when testing. The scary part is that it coughs up the AppleID first and last name of the AirTag to the thief/victim. Even when the tag isn’t in lost mode. This should be a deterrent for anyone wanting to use them to stalk… on the flip side it lets the thief know who’s thing they stole and took home.

These things are really interesting and it has everyone coming up with “imma criminal” scenarios.

They’re way too big for either.

Little something that may be of interest to people - looks like a neat idea with the airtag tucking within a 3D printed mount behind the bottle cage.

A thought came to me. Why can’t we put the airtags on ourselves in races for live tracking? With races where there are plenty of spectators, it should work. How long is needed to make the connection on the bike is the only thing I don’t know about. If. Zoom by a spectator at 18-25 mph, is there enough time to send a signal?

That is actually a cool idea - when we have spectators back

They are there at IM races

Edit to add: for running races, it would work perfectly

I put mine in my downtube through the DI2 battery holder. In my CF bike, the phone can see the tag from 60ft in open air. Seems like the best solution for casual longer term location finding.

I’ve got some boxes being shipped to our vacation rental with Airtags in them right now. I’m thinking the value here is that if we don’t see them when we arrive, we’ll likely know the story (gate guardhouse has them, landlord has them, still in-transit) and save us an evening of wonder/worry.

…so far they’re still sitting at the UPS depot

AirTag in a box loaded on a semi between DCs on the freeway. I’m getting an update about hourly. Super impressed.

(One box closer to Chicago is still at the DC)

I walked into the backyard to bring in the cat. Find My had the icon at edge of driveway and road. Went out front and she was at the mailbox, within a couple feet of the mailbox. So much better than Tile.
