Best training schedule

Hello - I am 63 yrs old, weigh 100kg and have an FTP of 262. I have climbed the Mont Ventoux twice, once via Malaucene and the other via Bedoin. I did them in 3 hrs. This yr (late July) I completed a 102km ride with a positive total climb of 1 234 m in 3 climbs in 5h 9 mins. Next year I would like to attempt one of the ‘Ardechois’ ride ~ 130km with 2,500m climbs in 6 climbs. Looking at the results from 2023 it looks my age category completed the race with 22-32 kph range! Can you suggest a training schedule? I have been using TR for some time now ~3 yrs and it has really helped me achieve the above goals. Thanks!

Hey there! Sounds like some epic climbing. I’ve done the Ventoux before – it’s incredible!!

If you’re using TR, we’d recommend using Plan Builder. It’ll create a custom plan for your goal event(s) based on your inputs.

In your case, I think choosing a Specialty Phase focus of Gran Fondo or Climbing Road Race would be good. The Gran Fondo plan will have you doing more steady efforts (think of trying to ride up a climb at your own pace), while the Climbing RR plan will feature more surges to simulate responding to attacks (think of trying to ride up a climb while responding to the dynamics of a pack of other riders). If you prefer to go at your own pace, the Gran Fondo plan may be better, but if you prefer to throw down some hard surges when going up longer climbs, the Climbing RR plan would be a great fit. Both plans would get you in good shape for your goals, though!
