Bionic Hip Back to Training

The day has come and my worn out hip will be upgraded to bionic. I’ve been off the bike since early Sept minus a couple test rides to see how bad it would hurt. And it was bad the next day

My goal is to get back to structured training 1 Dec!!! Hopefully my PT agrees with this goal.

One question I have do I have to suffer through a Ramp Test when I return? I’ve been told I can ride a stationary bike possibly in week two post surgery. I’m hoping to get back to an hour of Z2 riding on the training during recovery. Hopefully AI will reset my FTP by a bunch of watts to get me back on target.

Any else have experience with total hip replacement?

No, you don’t. Enable Adaptive Training in the Early Access menu (I think it should be on by default). Schedule a Ramp Test, then click the button to have AI FTP automatically detect (estimate) your FTP, accept it, off you go. Good luck with surgery and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I wasn’t sure if that would work with an 8 week unplanned break from training and riding.

It won’t change your FTP, but it will drop your progression levels. That may be enough, but I’d think you probably would benefit from lowering your FTP as well. I believe the FTP prediction will need two weeks of recent riding, so I’m not sure that will work for you. If it were me and you were trying to avoid a ramp test. I’d drop my FTP by 15-20% and let progression levels dial it in for you for a few weeks.

Enable AI FTP D and in the long term you won’t need to ramp test, it needs a few recent rides with power before it calculates (something like 10 or 12). In the meantime if its not available yet (AI FTP D) give your self a reasonable FTP (after my stomach op and 5weeks of recovery I knocked 50w off my pre op FTP) and don’t be afraid to toggle it down (or up ?) if you need too.
