Budget TT Disc Wheel

Your disc cover looks awesome! Do you know if you can fit this on to a standard stock rim?

Hi @AujujuSauce

The short answer is ā€œYes, I think soā€.

As I mentioned further up the thread, the manufacturer (Wheelbuilder in the USA) makes these in various sizes to fit a variety of rims. The shallower the rim, the bigger the diameter of the disc cover, and vice versa.

The one I bought was made to fit a Mavic Open Pro ( the old version) which of course is a very shallow (22mm I think) rim. I took a chance that it would fit an H Plus Son Archetype (25mm deep but wider that an Open Pro) and, indeed, it does fit.

The only modification I made was to sand off the very outer edge which flares outwards in the last millimetre or so of the disc cover. I presume that this was to fit the angle of the side of the rim wall of an Open Pro just outside of the brake track. With this sanding of the edge it fitted perfectly on the Archetype rim without the flared edge protruding - see my close-up photos further back in this thread.

What I would do is look at the range of disc covers on offer and buy one that most closely resembles the rim depth you have, unless they do actually specifiy the actual rim you have, in their product description, in which case youā€™d be good to go.

Thatā€™s as ORGANIC as it gets!:+1::+1:

So, I finally got round to attempting to fit my disc cover (recovery week!!), and havenā€™t got off to the best of starts!

When I lay the non-drive side cover on the wheel, it sits a mile away from the spokes, meaning thereā€™s no way I could tape the non-drive side spokes to the cover without it distorting the shape of it. It seems like itā€™s too dished for the wheel. The centre cutout is also 15mm away from the hub flange.

Iā€™ll have to see what Wheelbuilder have to say! . . .

Donā€™t you just hate it though when you lay out everything you need to start a job, only to fall at the first hurdle!

I second the HED Disc. I had one loaned to me and it was the one with the cover over the spokes. It was great. The hubs are good and can be changed easily and the rep here in Australia was really helpful when it came to helping me change from 10 speed to 11 speed. The good thing was I could swap between training wheels to HED Disc without having to change brake pads either as the HED had an aluminium brake track

Iā€™m on a Zipp Super 9 Tubular now but would gladly get another HED Disc should one pop up on the market place.

This is super helpful. I ordered a disc cover and it was mostly okay but noticed a little running with disc cover on cassette. I didnā€™t think of punching holes and using zip ties in that area.

@TooManyDogs Iā€™m pleased my thread has helped!
Iā€™ve just completed another season of weekly timetrialling and the disc (covered) wheel looks as good as the day I put it together, not a single squeak or rattle!

The cable ties fixing it to the drive side spokes was a big improvement to its fit. The rear derailleur, even when on the biggest rear sprocket, is well clear of the disc.

Good luck with yours, and post a photo or two when itā€™s done! :grinning:

Will do. Itā€™ll have to wait after my IM next week. Iā€™m hesitant to fiddle with it as this point without a lot of time to experiment.

How did you punch the holes for the cable ties? What type of tape did you use taping it down?

I used a 4mm brad-point drill bit, with a bit of wood under it. Itā€™s quite soft plastic so itā€™d be hard to accidentally crack it.

I used decent quality electrical tape, any by 3M brand is good if youā€™re in Europe. The bond from the tape glue gets stronger with age.

Anyone running a Yoeleo or Farsports rear disc?

The pricing seems good, not any reviews on these china disc wheels that I can find.

Iā€™m wondering if someone has used these wheels too?

A disc cover with actual wind tunnel testing, I donā€™t personally use one but a friend of mine does, he has sold hundreds of these and has lots of great reviews.

Ditto, I donā€™t use one (Ive a revolver disc) but my mate uses an EZ one. Im marginally stronger than him and marginally lighter but heā€™ll beat me marginally on simple courses probably because heā€™s super aero. The EZ disc certainly doesnā€™t do him any disadvantage there, and I think the set up is lighter too which would be to his advantage. Lol, on technical courses he simply smashes me, maybe in small part to the EZdisc being lighter but in the main part because heā€™s simply more skillful than me :joy:

Iā€™ve used an Aeron disc from Polish company RON - its a cover bonded onto a spoked wheel - its done about 4 years now without any issues - they only cost about Ā£400 - itā€™s a bargainā€¦and you can ride it safely through potholes as well :grin:ā€¦great customer service as well.

Iā€™ve had two wheels that I covered with Wheelbuilder.com wheel covers - I know these are not always accepted under UCI but I used them for triathlons - both were fantastic

I picked up a Flo disk a few years ago and still use to this day, its great, durable, and was affordable

Really I think (IMO) there is little differences in disks, the covers will get you 99.5% there. I bought the dedicated wheel as I had some spare cash and I didnā€™t like having to deal with the little plastic screws to hold it on. Only shame of my Flo disk is it doesnā€™t make the whoop whoop sound, which is clearly the best part.

Iā€™ve bought a wheel cover from http://dyma.com.au and it works a treat. Thereā€™s no Whoop/whoop sound but I do Feel fast.

A little bumpā€¦

Going to eat crow hereā€¦I donā€™t do many ITTā€™s (2/year maybe) so a dedicated disc is sort of over the top for me not being good at time trialing. I sold my HED long ago and took a chance on another cover from Wheelbuilders. I got rid of my first one a long time ago as I was not impressed. It rattled and didnā€™t seem to be very solid.

Fast forward a decade or so. I Installed and rode a new one today. I have to say compared to the first one this one seemed way more solid. The first was cut to a 303 and this one is cut to a ENVE 7.8. Perhaps the smaller diameter cover is the difference? IDK but, no rattling and honestly it felt solid, fast and simple to install.

Anyway, I definitely recommend this option especially the deeper the wheel.

It looks so good! How long have you had it? Is it full carbon construction or with bonded carbon fairing?

EZDisc gets my vote
