I’ve built a plan with the new plan builder to reach a goal event in November 2025. The goal event is quite a bit longer than what I’m used to and will be roughly 10 hours on the bike in a gravel race. The plan that’s been built has roughly 4.5 hour to 7.5 hour weeks with 2 indoor interval sessions as the hard sessions and then easy and endurance rides for the remaining 3 rides per week. Ill need to fit in longer and longer rides leading up to the event when i can fit them in over weekends, planning to build closer to the event getting 5+ hour rides in. Whats the best way to do this with the training plan? Just get those larger rides in when i can and let adaptive training sort the rest out?
Yes but it kept saying my training load would be too high. i was wondering if there was an option to build the volume up over time to prevent overtraining
I adjust the times for each day to reflect how much time I have and would ideally like to train that day. I let TR take care of the rest. It adapts the plan and adjusts workout time and volume accordingly. So, even though I tell TR I have 2 hours available 5 days/week, it will often serve up shorter workouts based on my current volume and/or fatigue. For instance – I did a 2 hour sweetspot workout today. Tomorrow’s workout got adjusted down from a 2 hour endurance ride to a 1:30 much easier endurance ride.
Hey there and welcome to the TR community!
One way to make those changes would be to do as @gally24 suggested.
You could also manually choose longer Z2 rides from our Workout Library and plug them into your plan as you see fit.
Whichever method you prefer, Adaptive Training and Red Light/Green Light will give you a heads up if you’re taking on too much additional stress and adjust your future workouts as necessary.
This article also has some good tips on adding extra volume to your plan:
Hope that helps you out – feel free to let us know if you have any additional questions!
From what i gather, the training volume for each week is built from analysing previous workouts (like rides imported from strava + trainer road workouts), and i assume your typical weekly volume? So if i make a plan for the year, and then complete longer endurance rides by adding them manually or just doing them, will my plan adjust and add volume? or will it keep at the roughly 6 - 7 hours per week even if I’m completing say 10 hour weeks
At the moment, your plan won’t automatically increase your volume. This is a feature we are working on adding, though!
If you do a period of training where you’ve increased your volume and you’d like to see if Plan Builder would recommend any changes from your original plan, for now, you can manually edit your plan. If PB sees that you can handle more volume than you could initially, that change will be reflected as you go through the steps of “rebuilding” the plan.
