I have used a chest HRM forever, however lately it just stops working. I have tried Garmin and Polar straps and monitors but still no joy. Can anyone recommend a wrist alternative that links to TR and strata?
I can’t help with a wrist alternative, but are you wetting the electrode pads and ensuring it’s a tight fit?
Battery
And even if you swapped batteries, try another battery (or 2)
Thanks for your responses.
And yes, batteries have been changed (new one more than twice). Monitor and strap soaked!
Moved the HRM position. The best being off centre from the middle of the chest. I never had any issues in the past.
Not sure what to do. Sometimes it works after 5 minutes into the workout, then freezes. It never says it’s disconnected. I can remove the HRM during the workout and it will disconnect the Bluetooth.
If you really do want to move away from chest strap then what you’re looking for is an arm based optical HRM. The two that come to mind:
The contacts in the strap do wear out over time, you can pick up genetic replacements online. The press stud contacts can also stop working well if they are really grimy: corroded from sweat. I’m onto the third strap on my Tickr v1.
Check for liquid (sweat) damage inside.
That is what killed my last two.
In mine what solved it was cutting the strap (might be difficult depending on the strap) between the electrodes, I think what happens (no idea how) is with time the strap becomes conductive.
My wife really likes the Wahoo arm strap monitor.
Mine tend to die after 18 months. Just throw it away and get a new one.
+1 from me. Moved to a Tickr Fit armband a few weeks ago and I prefer them to chest straps.
It’s interesting, I’ve noticed that despite being an older HRM the people who end up with a TICKR FIT seem to really like it.
1 single armband can never measure heart rate, only the pulse. Pulse and heart rate are not the same. Every pulse beat is preceded by a heart beat but not every heart beat is proceeded by a pulse beat and it is possible to have a 200+ bpm heart rate but only a 30 bpm pulse rate
Interesting. I’ve had terrible luck with armband HR monitors. Granted only the Scosche but for me it’s super sensitive for me on placement and I can never find the right spot. Id prefer armband but just can’t get it to work right.
@TooManyDogs Every body is different. Either chest or arm work perfectly fine for me, even wrist is fine.
Why would anyone ever use an armband?
The electrical signal measured in a chest HRM doesn’t exist on your arm. You’re buying a second optical HRM.
- Chest HRM.
- Throw away your plastic clothes.
- Put in a fresh battery bought from a real shop.
- Job done.
Are you rinsing out the strap regularly? +1 on the comment about the strap becoming conductive over time if not cleaned regularly. I’ve had this happen on a garmin strap in the past.

Plenty of reasons starting with comfort & convenience to name the ones off the top of my head. My wife prefers the arm strap vs chest strap due to fit and convenience with her bras & tops.

I know that I get annoyed with my chest strap for MTB riding & racing at times, even gravel to a degree. The active motion there combined with a chest hydration pack can make the HR strap rather fussy and even uncomfortable. I am planning to get a Tickr Fit to try for these uses despite recognizing the potential that the arm placement could bring it’s own issues with movement.
- It’s only a second one if you have a first one. Not everyone is rolling around with a fitness watch (which I assume you are implying?) so this could be the first and only optical monitor for a given person.
- Not sure where this is pointing, but the vast majority of cycling & fitness falls into the “plastic” (aka synthetic) material category.
I could just never get chest straps to work consistently.
The Verity Sense has never let me down.
To me, that seems like sounds reasoning for using it.
