I have a 2-bike Kuat hitch rack, the one that grips the tires. I’m looking for some kind of cover that I can put over the bikes to protect them from the elements a bit on long drives. I’ve had some longer drives to events where I’ve had to drive through snow or rain and when I got to the destination the bikes were just covered in dirt and road grime. Looked like I rode them through Unbound. So I’m trying to find some cover that I can throw on pretty quickly and take off at my destination. Any ideas?
Bunch of options out there from Velosock to Scicon to Evoc. You can also find a bunch on Amazon from other brands.
Recommendations will be hit or miss. I can tell you the reason that many people don’t cover them is the added wind resistance can create major issues for the hitch, rack, and bikes.
That being said, I have also seen instances where people cover them just fine. I think a lot has to do with the vehicle. A larger vehicle (SUV/truck with cap) will block the wind a lot better than a smaller car.
I can fit two bikes in the back of my SUV, so on long trips or if expecting bad weather on the way, I stick them in the back rather than on the hitch rack. I lay one down, cover it with a doubled moving blanket, then lay the other on top of it. They’re also more secure if stopping to eat or something. I’ll cover them with a something to keep them out of sight.
