Hi, does anyone here suffer from dermatitis? Randomly I have had a flare up, my doctor said it is contact dermatitis. It’s really strange as nothing in my diet/lifestyle has changed.
Anyway I have a few patches on my calves, joints and eyelids. I have bit of a theory that it seems to be sweat related.
After a hard ride I seem to get a real itchy patch in the crease behind my knees and also on my elbow joint.
If anyone else has suffered from this have you found anything particular helpful in treating it?
I’m waiting for a follow up with my doctor. I have tried emollient creams which help but these aren’t very practical as I go to the gym too and if I have these on it leaves a greasy mark on the equipment and makes it slippery.
I have a tube of steroid cream (triamcinolone) from my doctor that does the trick anytime my atopic dermatitis (eczema) flares up on the back of my calves. I imagine your doctor will prescribe something similar.
Do you get regular flare ups?
Mine is really annoying as iv never suffered with anything in 40years now it’s appeared out of no where, and just as I think it’s improved and about to go away it comes back again.
Will try and speak to my doctor tomorrow to try some other things. I keep seeing emuaid advertised on socials but don’t want to try a £50 if it isn’t any good
Meh, I have symptoms here and there, but mine are more of annoyance than a complaint.
You don’t need to jump to trying alternative medications from facebook ads, just get in with your GP and they should get you sorted (likely with a topical steroid cream).
In the meantime, have you switched soaps recently? Using a perfumed laundry detergent? You can probably use some of that colloidal oatmeal soap or lotion until you get seen by your doctor.
I used to have a lot of eczema during all my youth up to 30 years old. I went to a lot of dermatologists and nobody could really fix it.
What solved it was when i changed my diet to something much more alkaline. (Search for acid/base or alkaline diet).
I nearly forgot about it as this type of diet make sense anyway and is not really a constraint. I started training again 2 or 3 years ago (I’m now 49) and now i get some eczema from time to time when I ramp up the training intensity/volume and with it the amount of sugar i consume. My gut is also very sensitive to sugar, and any trouble there is usually also linked with the eczema episodes. What i do then is basically eat more veggies, and not overdo sugar every workout. (And i also got some cream from the dermatologist, but for me that just putting a band aid on the problem)
There are also good mentions in the previous posts. Laundry detergent, soap, anything that could irritate the skin, sweat zones… Food allergies or just intolerance could trigger it too.
That’s the strange thing for me my diet, products or lifestyle hasn’t changed it just seems to have come from no where. If anything iv cut down on my sugar intake.
It can happen out of nowhere - during covid I had a mad flair up that all over, and ended up with a course of PV treatment! I’ve had eczema all my life but never that bad.
fwiw sweat is a big one for me. Also worth remembering that products can change - a number of times over the years I’ve had to change washing powder/ gel/ liquid as they’ve gone “new and improved”. And that’s just basic non-bio’s (always non-bio, and no fabric conditioner).
Here in Ireland I use silcocks base as a soap substitute and moisturiser. I have used aqueous cream in the past, but the sulfates in it can irritate some people (“baby” aqueous cream is sulphate free).
