Direto X Power Oscillating

I’ve recently upgraded from my trusty Flux S to a Direto X which feels completely different. At high power output my power starts fluctuating significantly, no matter how hard I try to pace evenly. At vo2 efforts power in erg is oscillating up to +/-20 watts around target. It feels like the trainer is over-reacting to slight deviations from target, forcing me to deviate even further in the opposite direction. It is extremely annoying and can ruin a workout where you’re hanging on for dear life anyway. Attached is a section from today’s workout, the first two intervals are in erg, the third in resistance mode to verify it is not my pacing.

Anyone experience the same? Could it be my gearing (I’m usually in big gears, which reduced oscillations on the Flux)? Is something wrong with the trainer?

Any feedback is appreciated, TYIA

Bigger gears hurt trainers in ERG mode in terms of keeping it smooth and steady. While the Direto isn’t the best trainer on earth in terms of that, it should be a bit cleaner than what you’re seeing. If you shift to the small ring in the front it’ll take care of the majority of your issue.

To test erg mode, try switching to resistance mode and complete intervals side by side to compare. I only use small ring on dorito since I find erg oscillations at 300+ watts just kill me, but it could be just me being weak

Ray, would you always recommend the small chainring for erg mode? I’ve just bought the elite zumo and wasn’t sure whether to use the big or small chainring.

Thanks and love your reviews and your podcast with gplama.

Yup, I would.

In fact, so does TrainerRoad. Right after you pair a trainer there’s a screen that you probably dismissed immediately. Looks like the attached.
