Do you need Trainingpeaks, if you're using Trainer Road?

Beyond Strava, and Trainer Road, is there a reason to pay for Trainingpeaks – and if so, why?

:v:

Not if you use intervals.icu and/or your coach doesn’t connect with you via TrainingPeaks.

I did not know about intervals.icu, thank you so much – & I don’t have a coach, which is why I am debating what tools I should be using.

No, Training Peaks is overrated.

I use it to track all data, including health metrics. It is then the one place where all of my activity and data is visible. But, I don’t use the coaching or other forward planning features — it is strictly a record of what I’ve done. Not sure it’s worth the cost for just that use case.

TrainingPeaks free is a great way to archive stuff, recommended. Have you ever used TrainingPeaks? TrainerRoad analytics are good enough for the basics.

Triathlon support. TR just added running, but it’s implementation is basic at best and there is no support for swimming. If you only cycle I see no reason to use training peaks over TR.

I agree! I use it as an archive. I have a lot of years worth of data in there.

I’m paying for TP again, because I have a coach, and doing the same on health metrics. I have my weight going back 6 years, quarterly body measurements, daily RHR, etc. Pretty sure some of that is supported in free, but not sure.

A great feature in TrainingPeaks is Peak Performances where you can see the top 20 rides, I.e. the 20 rides with the highest power for various durations. Would be nice to have this in Intervals.icu or TrainerRoad.

I do like the emails for different HR notifications, but I realize that between strava premium and TR, it is a hefty monthly just for software.

You can do this in intervals easy enough on your power duration page. Set best effort durations on the right hand side and also use the curve to see power at different durations and turn on “next 5 maximal efforts”

Appreciate its 5, not 20 and a little more convoluted but the feature is there.

For me, in the last month or two Intervals has made some nice progress on quickly reviewing target vs actual. But the target workout with ranges:

needs to show on the actual graph

and eventually look like TrainingPeaks:

Just a quick glance and its easy to see I pushed a little harder on each interval. I normally don’t care about actual % FTP. Just confirmation that what I felt out on the road is what happened.

However on TP that graph is only on my laptop, can’t do that on TP Mobile app or using browser on my iPhone. Quick review post ride is still best on Garmin Connect mobile.

Good to see Intervals making slow and steady progress. I’ve sent a lot of email to TP telling them to wake up or get left behind. Except for WKO, I’d still rather use that for all my analysis.

There is no reason to pay for both. You’re not missing out! I just have it because I have a heap of years worth of data in there. But if you’re just starting out, there is no need. Intervals.icu is interesting and free (donation model at the moment) if you want to see some extra metrics that TR doesn’t have.

and in my opinion, no reason not to archive with TP free.

Yeah, I had a training plan loaded in there about 8 months ago, and will let the yearly fee lapse.

I don’t subscribe to TP but I get emails from them saying I set a personal new FTHR record. Not sure why.

Because you have a free account on TP?

I’m currently on the free version of TP, and weight / metrics are fully support. Plus everything syncs to WKO5.

The only limitations with the free version are:

  • You can only have 1 workout library - when I’ve had the paid, I’ve used multiple workout libraries to separate Core, Strength, Old - Strength, etc.
  • You can only add / move workouts around on the current + next day - this is a pain if you want to plan core / strength / etc. workouts for the week
  • No charts on the Dashboard beyond Fitness Summary
  • No access to ATP if you use this

Didn’t know I had any account on TP. Free or not. Guess I do tho.
