My A race is a 65 mile rough single track MTB course followed by a 45 mile even rougher trail run. I started creating an off road triathlon plan in plan builder and basically zeroed out the swim portion but the plan still creates swim workouts. Any recommendations on how to adjust any of the other plans or should I just upload my runs and let the system adapt to the added workload? MTB Marathon plan is most likely where I will go.
Welcome back
The cross country marathon plan is pretty solid but you’ll need to find double days to weave in 3-4hrs of easy running. Or maybe alternate weeks where the vo2 max bike become a hard run day.
Otherwise the full distance tri plan balances bike and run with a focus on endurance.
Since we don’t have any duathlon plans at the moment, picking a triathlon plan and ignoring the swim workouts may be the best way to go.
Otherwise, pairing up the MTB Marathon plan with your own runs could work as well. As @JoeX mentioned, you’d have to weave the runs into your plan yourself.
In either case, Red Light/Green Light will be able to analyze your training load and help keep you on track.
Are you planning to implement Duathlon plans near in the future? I see that the swim takes a big part of the triathlon plans and just ignoring it doesn’t seem a good option while replacing it with unplan biking or running can be risky
I opted for a low volume tri plan. During the base phase I swapped the swims for strength maintenance sessions (lifting heavy, but no progressive overload). Now that I’m in the build phase, I’ve swapped one of those strength sessions for a 30-45min base run.
It’s not ideal, but it seems to be working. One downside is that I can’t edit the plan or it’ll add the swims back in—I have to adjust my schedule day by day if I need to retool my weekly schedule. I do wish they’d take a new approach to plans that were more modular, rather than just massaging an existing static plan. It’d be nice to tell plan builder “My priority activity is biking, but I’d like to add running and strength maintenance sessions.”
Nothing on our roadmap to make Duathlon plans right now – if that changes, we will be sure to post about it, though.
