Hello!
I am in the middle of my second week of my first full distance triathlon (masters) plan. I’ve done 70.3 and century plans (both low volume with additional weekend rides) and decided to step up to mid volume for the full tri plan. I’m noticing that after each of the two ‘harder’ rides on the plan I’m getting yellow days that heavily decreases the volume of the next day. Is this to be expected in the beginning stages? Will the plan adapt accordingly or should I have stuck to low volume?
My concern is losing the training volume to be able to finish the Ironman, but it is still very early in the plan and I tend to overthink things.
Any insight is much appreciated!

Hey there,
With the step up to a higher volume, it’ll be normal to see some yellow days pop up on your TR Calendar. Your training load will be higher than it was previously, so some sessions may be a bit more demanding, especially when paired with more volume. RLGL will pick up on this to warn you and help you keep your plan on track in the long run.
If your yellow/red days fall on days when you usually plan to take a recovery/rest day, then that means your training is about right! Additionally, AT & RLGL will learn what you’re capable of doing as your fitness increases, which means you may see fewer yellow/red days in the future as you adapt to your new training load.
Considering you’re in the early Base Phase of training now, I wouldn’t worry too much about any “lost” volume. It’s better to start conservatively and to build up over a longer period than to start too hot and run into trouble with excess fatigue/burnout later on.
So in all, I wouldn’t stress over it at the moment – your plan should adapt as you progress through it!

Thanks Zackery
This is reassuring to hear. I know everyone says to trust in the process but hearing it explained really calms the nerves. Appreciate the input!
