Frame size - bigger or smaller

LBS is having a sale and I am considering an N+1. I can get to my fit on two frame sizes with different lengths and spacers. In that case, which would you choose and why:

  • Size 58 with 110mm stem
  • Size 60 with 90m stem

The 58 will also require some spacers to bring the bar up. Thanks.

Smaller would be my choice.

Smaller bikes are usually lighter, more agile and you can adjust them more to fit, there 's more of a limit when sizing down a larger bike as a really short stem can make handling twitchy

What type of bike? Road, gravel? Smaller usually means more responsive, but can feel twitchy. Larger means more stable, but can feel slow, especially in corners.

Best would be to test ride, of course…

Road bike - custom build so no test ride.

If this is a road bike, I’d say that 90mm is on the side of too short. I’d rather have the 110mm stem and a couple spacers underneath it if necessary. If you need 40mm+ of spacers under the stem then this frame is probably too long for you (too much reach and not enough stack).

Smaller! My last bike was a 56, which I thought fit well until I bought my current bike which is a 54 and it fits so much better. The 56 is now permanently on the trainer and it feels so gangly when I ride indoors.

Yup, without a bit more research and info, I tend to recommend the smaller size when people are on the bubble.

I’ve had to downsize far too many stems for people who bought too big.

i literally had the exact same dimension choice and went with the 58 and 110 stem with a road bike and i’m very happy.

i would try both if possible and maybe it’ll be super obvious. when i tried the 60 it was very very obvious it wasn’t right. i just felt more in tune with the 58 and like i was kinda hanging the 60 and at it’s mercy.

i’m sure if i spent more time fitting it i could have made the 60 work. but the 58 is great

so yeah…try and see if you can rule one out instantly.

Stack is gonna be lower on the 58.

If you like an aero position, go with the 58. If you need to be more upright, go with the 60.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking you can hold a low position if you haven’t done so previously.

Pros often use smaller sizes AND they slam the stem. You never see them size down and throw on a bunch of spacers or flip the stem up.

Thanks everyone. I am currently on a 58 from a different brand so I was leaning towards that. This setup puts my fit stack and reach (bottom bracket to handle bar) very similar… +/- 5mm or less. 2 spacers make up the difference in frame stack, so the fit is really close between the two sizes and my current daily driver.
