FTP detection timing

Guess it’s a simple one but it Xmas holidays and I’m sure support are eating and drinking too much, like most of us I reckon!

In a couple of weeks I’ll be able to view my AI FTP which dependent on figure I might leave it for a while. Does anyone know if viewing a ai ftp but not accepting it means you’d need to wait 28 days before there’s a chance TR will prompt you to update it?

Essentially I’m wondering if my checking delays any automated TR stuff.

Hey @firemunki

Yes! Whether or not you accept the AI FTP Detection, the 28-day timer will be reset.

Adaptive Training may however make an FTP adjustment . FTP adjustments are triggered if your Progression Levels surpass a level nine in the Sweet Spot, Threshold, VO2, or Anaerobic zone. An FTP adjustment will also be triggered if any one of your Progression Levels is lowered below level two. These Progression Level changes during the Specialty phase will result in a 2% FTP adjustment.

My sweetspot PL is >11 and AI FTP wants to lower my FTP…

It appears that outside of a Speciality phase, getting PLs>9 triggers an FTP Detection*.
While inside of a Speciality phase, it’s supposed to just up FTP by a fixed 2%.

* there’s no guarantee that this FTP Detection will result in an increase - tough crowd, innit

@Caro.Gomez-Villafane I just had an FTP Detection triggered by a PL>9, within the Android app; FWIW I found the “workflow” really quite annoying - seemingly giving me the choice to either accept the suggested new FTP or choose a fixed period of time for when the detection would next be run. But I didn’t want to do either: I didn’t want to accept the new number (too small of a bump) but nor did I want to have a detection scheduled for a fixed period of time ahead (because I wanted to choose this trigger date myself in the future). To achieve this outcome I had to force close the app, which seems a bit extreme! I suggest more options be presented within the workflow, ie. enable this workflow to be exited/closed without the user being forced into choosing anything.

Thank you for the feedback, @AldridgePrior!

Let’s dive in a little deeper to clarify some things. :slightly_smiling_face:

AI FTP Detection

AI FTP Detection will show after any workout when available, whether or not an athlete is using a training plan. It will show “early” if they successfully complete a Level 9 or greater in Sweet Spot, Threshold, VO2 Max, or Anaerobic workout.

FTP Adjustment During the Specialty Phase of a TR Training Plan

AI FTP Detection will not run during the Specialty phase. Adaptive Training may however make an FTP adjustment.

Decrease in FTP

Regarding the AI FTP Detection decrease you received on December 26, 2023, of 8 watts, by looking at your Calendar, I have a feeling it was because of your training pattern before it. I can see you took almost 2 weeks off in November and weren’t as consistent with your workouts as you were in October.

Keep in mind this decrease is not massive and will probably ramp back up with consistency. :slightly_smiling_face:

If you want to increase your FTP, I would recommend creating a training plan with Plan Builder or manually entering each training phase to follow a natural progression of Base, Build, and Specialty. This way, you can ensure you’re working the correct energy systems in a progression that sustains and builds FTP.

Note: your FTP is already pretty high, so as you normally “peak” your FTP, the gains will be naturally smaller.

Here is more info on how to build your FTP:

@AldridgePrior, it sounds like you are describing the “Remind Me Later” banner that appears after a ride if you haven’t accepted the current AI FTP Detection.

If so, the modal appeared because you were eligible to run AI FTP Detection, not because of completing a >9.0 session.

We are, however, tracking the athlete’s user experience with this specific banner to see if adding a “Never” option button is required so you don’t get asked unless you want to.

To clarify, if you were to set “a detection scheduled for a fixed period of time ahead” it just means that the pop-up banner would appear again on that date. It does not mean you are accepting the current AI FTP Detection. :slightly_smiling_face:

Just in case, I also wanted to mention that the AI FTP Detection resets every 28 days whether you accept it or not. So really, accepting the current value any day within that time frame does not influence the AI FTP Detection number.

I was just hit with the pop up offering a change or remind me later at the start of a rest week at the end of a (short) block. Even though I understood that it was just hitting that 28 day timer and there was a change to make, it definitely seemed odd timing in relation to the start of a rest week and a new training plan starting a few days later. I felt weirdly forced to math if snoozing for a week was going to mess me up or not with the start of the new block.

Too many buttons and too many words can be bad, seems like Never would be a good option, assuming you can easily turn it back on, maybe when you manually run it/accept a change it has an option to revert back to 28 day? The part that seems like it would be too wordy/add to many buttons but seems like a logical addition is the option to snooze to the next training block. If I got the prompt 2 days before starting a new block for example vs a week like I had, I probably would have been worried I would not be able to run it at the start of the new block. I’m sure running it a week out at the start of the rest week would have been fine, it just seemed weird.

Thanks for the reply!

If I remember correctly🤞, the modal I’m referring to appeared on 29-Dec immediately following my 9.2 SS w/o, 6 days after my AIFTP countdown was reset on 23-Dec (when I chose to ignore the 2w uplift offered). That’s why I thought this 29-Dec modal was perhaps showing “early”, triggered by the >9 SS w/o, offering me the same 2w uplift that I’d declined 6 days earlier.
NB I was kind of expecting the same thing to happen yesterday (2-Jan), when I completed a 9.7 SS w/o, but nothing doing this time.

Anyhow, regardless of what triggered the modal that I saw, my feedback is just that, similar perhaps to @mrtopher1980, the “Remind Me Later” part meant I was being asked to make an important choice  for me at a moment that wasn’t really ideal (me just climbing off the trainer after a hard w/o, and without the Calendar being visible)…

*important just because the opportunity to trigger AIFTP calcs is quite a valuable commodity within TR, so I want to spend those opportunities carefully, like timing them to be at specific points in my plan / training rather than in an arbitrary 2 weeks, say.

Thankyou for your explanations of the AI FTP detection! :+1:

I was so disappointed in my FTP drop of 3 watts after completing a good threshold session. I banged my handlebars and shook my head , proper hissy fit! :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: Of course, I didn’t accept the new number.
My problem could have been that I had to lower the intensity on a couple of threshold /vo2max sessions the previous 2 weeks due to fatigue. Caused by a couple of cyclo x races and outdoor wet muddy training rides.
Seeing as I have done a lot of outdoor rides over Christmas, my next FTP offering is likely to make me :sob:
So my thoughts are ,to do a proper test and see how that compares with the AI.

Fortunately the cx season ends end of January, so I’ll be switching plans and also considering doing a Masters version (tho’ I hate endurance, but need to do it)

Excellent! This is really good to know to make our athlete’s experience better :slightly_smiling_face:

Don’t be disappointed @Lydiagould! 3 watts is minimal :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Once your next AI FTP Detection comes you can assess whether you’d like to do the Ramp Test.

Ehhh, I am sure it doesn’t, I was in Base 1, SS 9.2, no ftp trigger.
When aiFTP was available (9 - 10 days later) it gave +1 watt, so the same. I think a ‘forecast’ increase has to be seen as well.

See my comment just above:

NB I was kind of expecting the same thing to happen yesterday (2-Jan), when I completed a 9.7 SS w/o, but nothing doing this time.

It’s had the look of being a bit random for me, but I’m certain that’s just because the precise rules haven’t been laid out. No big deal for me, just minor interest! :person_shrugging:

Another data point regarding confusing UX issues and/or logic surrounding this “reminder” functionality:

  • Opening the mobile (android) app today, I’m greeted with a “Reminder” dialog, saying “New AI FTP Available! This is your reminder to use AI FTP Detection”, with a red << Detect FTP >> button. [the use of the word “New” here clearly implies (to me!) that an actual new run of AI FTP Detection is available…]

  • Meanwhile, over in the web app, if I look under the Account settings and press the white << AI FTP Detection >> button sitting there, that just leads through to the page which says “Your Recent AI FTP Detection is Still Available.”, with the countdown timer saying: “You can view a new AI FTP Detection in 3 Days : 12 Hours : 53 Minutes : 17 Seconds” [ie. no new run of AI FTP actually available, just the chance to accept an old number.]

Something needs fixing here IMO.

Yes as you pointed out to me I had the same last Tuesday when completing a SS 9.2.

I thought it was a new run with the same result until your feedback

…I decided not to press that << Detect FTP >> button that the Reminder dialog offered me, which meant I had to choose when to have the Reminder presented to me again (something discussed earlier).

I chose the option to be reminded again after the next workout…

I’ve just now completed that “next workout”, but no Reminder was shown afterwards, so it didn’t do what was earlier implied/described. :person_shrugging:

Instead, the “Your Progression Levels Increased!” screen presented just had the text “New AI FTP Detection available in 3 days : etc”, as per the web app text in my previous post.

Further suggesting, to me, that this Reminder functionality or wording is confusing / inconsistent / somewhat broken currently. @Caro.Gomez-Villafane

Thank you @AldridgePrior! I will report it to the team and get back to you

To make sure I understand correctly, you set the reminder me later timer for the next workout, but once you completed Chiricahua, did it not prompt you to accept the current AI FTP Detection available? It showed the normal PL change with the timer at the bottom of when the new AI FTP Detection will be available.
