I have a set of Garmin power pedals. I don’t use a head unit for indoor rides and simply calibrate using the Garmin Connect app. I initially set the crank length from the default 172.5 mm when I got the pedals and thought it would “stick”. I just realized yesterday that it does NOT. According to Garmin support, I need to set the correct crank length each and every time I calibrate using the Connect App. Am I the only one who didn’t know this and trained with the wrong power values for long period of time?
According to Garmin Support “At this point there isn’t a “Save” button for the crank length setting. If you would like, you can leave any suggestion you may have at Share Ideas | Garmin. Customer suggestions are reviewed daily and are often implemented.”
I have Garmin power pedals and moved from 172.5 to 165mm cranks. I am positive I made the change to 165 and also positive that I never continually went back and changed them each time.
I’ll connect to them tonight and double check it still shows 165. If it somehow didn’t automatically save and my power was off for the 3-4 months since changing crank lengths, that’d be a pretty big disappointment.
Just checked my garmin power pedals - they’ve been remaining at 165mm and I haven’t adjusted that at all since installing the shorter cranks about 8 months ago.
When connecting to multiple devices (watch, headunit, zwift, etc.) you need to set the crank length on each device, otherwise it defaults to 172.5mm and the pushes that back into Garmin Connect. I had this happen when I was using my watch and then tried to use a headunit.
Once I had them all set at the correct length, it hasn’t changed.
I also have the XC100 pedals. In the past, I used them on three different bikes, with different crank lengths. I use them with TR for indoor workouts, a Fenix watch and a Garmin head unit. The way I understand it, and this has been working for me for a few years now, is that each time you use a different device it saves the crank length to the pedals. So if I use my head unit on one bike and set the length to 165, then put the pedals on another bike with a different crank length and use the head unit I need to change the length. For reasons not important here, I usually use my watch on my gravel bike, head unit on the MTB and phone to calibrate when the pedals are on my TRI bike for indoor workouts. This keeps me from having to change the length all the time. Hope that helps.
