Garmin Varia radar mount for Specialized Tarmac SL8

Hi guys, I have started to build up my new Tarmac SL8. The seat post is different from the SL7 and so I can no longer use my previous screwed holders to mount the Garmin Varia well. I have therefore started to develop a new solution. Enclosed you will find pictures of the first prototype. Do you like the solution? Do you have any suggestions for improvement?

I have also developed a new silicone adapter for the original mounting kit of the Varia, in case anyone needs one. Send me a message.

Very nice! I printed one for my Giant Propel, but yours is way nicer. How is it secured to the post? Also, I used a separate part that I purchased for the quarter lock and attached it with screws to the 3d print. Did you print the Garmin quarter lock feature? I was worried about the durability of the print.

Slick! Just make sure it’s clear of the rear tyre. Garmin tech docs don’t give an exact distance but it looks ~10cm clear of the top of the rear tyre. (Too low on my MTB and I get false positives from the knobby tyre).

You might want to use something that’s injection molded for the actual interface to the radar so it’s less likely to pop off and get lost or damaged.

You could use a piece of an old Garmin mount you have laying around or buy a cheap mount like this one. Just put a screw through the middle into your printed clamp and that should work great.

Hi @mrgoman, the holder consists of several parts and two screws tighten it to the seat post. It can therefore also be attached much higher up. The quarter lock feature is a purchased part. I have already printed this, but the tolerances are too large.

Hi @GPLama, I find the mounted position optically best and with the Tarmac it also works without restrictions. However, the holder can also be mounted 10 cm higher.

Hi @huges84, thank you for your suggestion. I have already printed the Garmin mount and had good experience with it in terms of durability. However, the tolerances are quite high. That’s why I went exactly the way you suggested.

Thats amazing! Would love a similar one to the new SuperSix!

Your design makes something clunky look smooth and integrated.

Hi @Dubadai, thank you very much! I would also be interested in developing one for the Supersix. The finished solution should cost around 50 euros. Would it be worth it to you?

Very smart! Is the light vertical when the bike is flat? It’s at an angle in all your pics but that might just be the perspective. If I buy an SL8 would definitely be interested in one of these, much nicer than having a light held on with a rubber band.

Hi @cartsman, thank you! Yes, the light is 100% vertical when the bike is flat.

For sure, considering that the bulky one from Garmin themselves cost 25 euros, 50 is perfectly fine for a custom one

Great job with the design! How much does it weigh?

This is really nice! Any chance you have something like this for an SL6? I saw the saddle mount, but that wouldn’t work for me. I also have a Ventum NS1 I’d love to outfit with one!

Thanks!

Hi, i think the next version will be for the TARMAC SL7. After that i can build a version for the SL6. Can you send me the shape of your Ventum NS1 seatpost? For that please put your seat post on squared paper and trace the contour with a sharp pencil. With a photo of it, I can match up my library.

I don’t have any squared paper, but perhaps this would work? If not, I’ll pick some paper up. The attached has measurements on it and my email so we can take this offline. Thank you!
