That said, I think we need to expand our thinking. As of today, there’s two options: Eurosport Player and Discovery+. Eurosport Player is supposed to be phased out in Jan but I’m not sure it will be phased out in every country.
Regardless, the price of either Eurosport Player or Discovery+ varies between countries in Europe. If you’re really trying to min/max you aren’t restricted to UK only, in theory you just need to find a way to sign up from any of the countries that will have Eurosport cycling coverage and ideally the cheapest country. You’re going to VPN it regardless and the different language feeds will still be available.
For me the limiter is where I have a willing accomplice to pay for the service.
I know there has been speculation about getting pre-paid credit cards tied to a specific country and using those to sing up, then VPN to access. Has anyone actually tried this?
Don’t know when precisely so you should definitely start binging anything you wanted to see. Could be any time soon, up to around 24 hours from now.
If you want to download them, no harm in spilling the beans now. You can use chrome to get the url for master playlist m3u8 and then use youtube-dl to pull down the full video. I installed youtube-dl with chocolatey, but this will be platform specific.
Then open the gcn website with the chrome debugger pane open (F11). Start the video you want. Filter to m3u8 and get the index.
I’m based in the US.
I created an account on Discovery+ while VPN’d to the UK.
I tried to use my Card from Wise (funded with English pounds) but that payment was rejected. I also tried via Paypal and that was rejected as well.
Same here and no luck. I also created a UK PayPal account linked to my US credit card and PayPal permanently locked that account. Maybe there is a workaround using a prepaid UK card?
With Nord (and probably others), I think you can regularly save around 40% with a “sale”. My renewal was going to be full price, but then I found I can get the deal again. I think I’m at $90 or a titch more for 2 years … maybe.
Nord has a nice iPhone version, so I run VPN 100% of the time when on phone or computer.
I have Disco+ through my EE mobile contract which has worked out really handy given the GCN news (I was considering cancelling GCN anyway, think I said something upthread to that effect).
Worth checking if you have EE if you have any add-on slots available (I got 3 on my contract and it didn’t cost much more to have that, I certainly didn’t select the contract on that basis).
so if a person living in the US had a VPN and a prepaid bank card from say…Bank of Ireland, and the VPN was set to…oh…let’s randomly pick Dublin…could said US citizen then sign up for Eurosport? Said person cannot bear the idea of listening to Bob Roll say “Tur day France” or Chris Horner talk about himself ad nauseam
“Said person cannot bear the idea of listening to Bob Roll say “Tur day France” …”
That is the least of BobK’s offences. The worst part is his live “translation” of the French interviews. It is not only incorrect, it is often completely unrelated to what the rider is actually saying and sometimes the exact opposite of what is being said. He is so wrong that he could be exposing himself to a defamation lawsuite.
I didn’t. Someone else above was talking about having made a UK paypal account. One obviously needs some kind of virtual phone number. I found this site:
I’m personally waiting to find out that discovery+ from the UK works in the US over VPN before I even try to jump through tall the hoops. It doesn’t help to get the account if they block VPN use.
