RIP GCN+, you were too beautiful for this world

From the recent Cyclingnews article on the demise of GCN:
ā€œIt’s worth remembering that Europeans on holiday can watch all cyclocross live streams on Discovery+ Eurosport by using a VPN such as ExpressVPN from abroad.ā€

This to me suggests that watching European Disco+ via a VPN works fine. I’m thinking I’ll go ahead and get my UK-based pal to create an account and see how that goes…

That would be good news. I wonder if that is a sure thing that has been tested (discovery+ & VPN) or if they are just assuming.

Well they are definitely advertising VPNs. But the fact that a Euro-based site is doing so suggests VPNs can be used to watch Euro-based content from abroad.

Importantly I’m pretty certain that signing up for Discovery+ in the US then VPNing to Europe does you no good. You have to figure out a way to get a valid login for a European Disco+ account, which is proving difficult unless you have a willing accomplice in Europe.

Confirming that it definitely works via VPN.

It’s probably using the same streaming platform that GCN was.

Thanks for this confirmation.

Does it work via VPN when streamed from a browser (not from the app)?

A further hurdle is that outside Europe those of us on iOS devices can’t download the correct version of the app to stream European content, because app stores are georestricted.

Yes, that limits viewing and replay through the browser. Further limitation is while on VPN, you can’t ā€œcastā€ to a ChromeCast or AppleTV.

Yep I use a web browser. But I do have an oldish Apple TV that I might set up to use the UK App Store - and you can install VPN apps on Apple TV now.

Here’s an update on my attempts:

  • I connect to the UK via MulvadVPN and created an account on Discovery+
  • Tried to subscibe by paying with Paypal (US Based account) and got denied.
  • Tried my Wise debit card with UK funds. Denied (the card was issued by Wise USA).
  • Shared my login with my friend in France and asked him to register with his French card: Denied!

It really looks like a UK based payment option is required. I have a contact there and will try tomorrow.

Good point. I should be able to dedicate an old AppleTV to the UK app store as well. Just need to make sure it can update to tvOS17 for the VPN app.

If you have a friend in France why not just get them to sign up for a Eurosport account, then point your VPN to France and you’re set? I believe language can be specified for a given broadcast.

I’m seriously depressed. I feel like there’s been a death in the family. I so looked forward to the Breakaway, with Orla’s infectious laugh, Dan’s Robbie’s insights and even Adam’s sarcasm. Worst Christmas ever :disappointed:

I guess I need to go first then.

My tubi free account is just whatever email you use for the forum. Will work for anyone in the us. No cycling content.

I just hope that someone is willing to post step-by-step instructions after this is all figured out.

Yes, and before the Spring Classics start :upside_down_face:

I have an old UK bank account so it was relatively easy for me, but here are the steps I would try if I didn’t:

  1. Set VPN to UK
  2. Sign up for a UK SMS service (seem to be a bunch when I Google)
  3. Sign up for PayPal UK, using the SMS service to validate
  4. Send funds to your UK PayPal account
  5. Sign up for Discovery Plus using UK PayPal account
