Handlebar with channels for externally routed cables?

Hi all,

I would like to find a new handlebar which has channels recessed underneath for the gear cables and brake hoses, so they emerge close to the stem. Ideally, I would like the bar to be carbon, aero-profiled, compact drop shape, and with little flare.

So far, the only options I’ve found are the Zipp SL80 race (but it seem it’s only compatible with SRAM AXS) and the Pro PLT Ergo Carbon (not exactly aero, but has some flat on the tops for comfort).

My bike (Canyon) has a 1 1/4" steerer, so that rules out many integrated bar/stem options, though I’m also happy to keep the flexibility of being able to change stem length again in future.

Many thanks!

Not sure what your budget it, but the Enve SES AR Road bars would work.

Second recommendation for the Enve AR bar…by far my favorite HB right now.

I think the flare/drop shape (and price ! ) might not exactly be my cup of tea, but it definitely ticks a lot of boxes. Thanks for the feedback.

Cervelo has some bars with a channel for routing like the HB13 (40cm Cervelo HB13 Carbon Compact Road Handlebar 31.8mm – Elevate Cycling they have photos of the bottom )

how about this:

These look really interesting by the the hoods! The little bump where the hydraulic hose enters the shifter bugs me on other bars sometimes when I spend too much time thinking about it

You didn’t mention what width you’re looking for, but some that offer narrower sizes(which is why they’re on my radar). I have a set of each of these on current bikes. The R175’s replaced a set of the PRO PLT ERGO Carbon you mentioned, which I liked a lot, but wanted some flare after growing fond of my Enve SES Aero handlebars on other bikes(three of them)

Cervelo AB09, also available as a Flared version.
EXS R175

There’s also a shorter reach Zipp SL 70 XPLR Carbon in addition to the SL80 Race you listed. To be clear, these will work fine with Shimano levers as well, but obviously Sram/Zipp don’t want to advertise that.

Thanks for the tips. I’m looking for 38-40 cm width in the hoods and max 40 cm in the drops, as I don’t like the flare too much and just ride on the road.

FWIW, I contacted Zipp and they told me directly that, for the SL80 Race the

“overhang” where a brake hose would exit a hydraulic controller does not have clearance for mech gear and brake housing

and for mechanical compatibility, to look to the SL70 Ergo. I imagine it would work fine with Shimano Di2, like you suggest, but I have 105 mechanical.

The R175 looks pretty good. I’d appreciate more reach, but that’s just being greedy! Any pros (pardon the pun) or cons between that and the Pro PLT Ergo Carbon? Is there room for a Wahoo/light mount beside the stem on the R175, or is there another solution?

Ahhh… Didn’t catch the mechanical part. Any of the PLT or R175 would work, as would the AB09.
You definitely won’t be able to fit anything next to the stem of the R175, but I did run clip on aero bars on my 38cm Pro PLT for a brief time, so there is probably 15mm on each side of a normal width stem. Same goes for the AB09… I still use clip on aero bars with mine without issue.
The Pro PLT in 36 and 38 versions have have even shorter reach than the R175 from memory at 68mm versus 70mm. The Cervelo have 80mm, which is longer than both.

Small pity about the reach alright. I had some trouble finding a reasonably priced 130 mm -17 degree stem for my Canyon’s 1 1/4" steerer - I don’t know if I have the courage to search for a 140 mm one!

Thanks again for all that info.

This is the Enve Aero In Route Road Bar and In Route Aero Stem with Bypass spacer on my MOG. Can run it full integrated, or pop out of the bar like seen.
