Has anyone used TrainerRoad to successfully complete the Peaks Challenge in Australia?

I’m planning to do the Bicycle Network training camp. Has anyone done it? Worth it?

Not me! I haven’t done 3 Peaks. Have done Tour of Bright a few times though.

In summary, your responses have helped me come to these conclusions:

  1. Mid-vol TR programs are useful for training for Peaks and people who have done it have trained that way. Low-vol programs are probably not sufficient and high-volume programs are too much.
  2. Need to compliment structured training with long outdoor days in the saddle, doing Z2 type endurance rides and climbing.
  3. Need to be mindful of own body/age/limitations.

If it were me I’d do a LV Fondo TR plan, as much endurance/tempo as possible on top of that and get to Bright and do a training camp/long weekend of climbing or two. And really, really work on a fuelling strategy for the event.

I completed Peaks this year.
Was on the LV TR plan, but added long rides on the weekends - including ramping up to regular 200k rides in January and February.

As you had probably heard, this year’s event was in the middle of Victoria’s heat wave. It was approaching 40C in the valleys. I was quietly prepared and in my best fitness in many years. But I suffered in the heat and cramped up badly at Omeo.

My key learnings (which should also help you) …

  • fueling and nutrition strategy << I discovered early on that I had difficulty consuming food after 8hrs on the bike, so I had to rely on liquid carbs. I had to rethink my whole carb intake strategy. But luckily I started early and had time to try out different option what food to consume whilst on the bike - gels? chews? bars? etc … what’s your limit. I ended up baking my own fruit cake + brownie
  • what works if cramp - pickle juice? cramp fix? vegemite?
  • bike fit - eg bib shorts, saddles, bar tapes, etc … << anything that works up till 6 hrs may not be comfortable after 11 hours. Also, storage options - pockets on bib shorts? top tube bags? This was the easiest for me to control.
