Health Insurance Reimbursement for TR Workouts

I think I remember that in one of the podcasts, the hosts discussed using your TR history to get the exercise reimbursement many of us have associated with our health insurance. I tried searching the blog and the forum but came up empty. If you remember this discussion (or if you have successfully gotten reimbursed), could you please point me in the right direction?

This is the related podcast and thread:

Not sure I saw a detailed answer?

Thatā€™d be great. I was getting that discount when I went to the gym pre-rona

Hey! Jonathan spoke to that process a bit here: ā€˜UHC Gym Check-in Discountsā€™ but ultimately, we recommend you call your healthcare provider to see if there is a way to submit your completed TrainerRoad workouts to receive a credit towards your deductible. :metal:

Correct me if Iā€™m wrong, but from what I remember, you can only get reimbursed for a TR workout if you have medicare insurance. That is because this type of insurance protects you from high out-of-pocket medical costs. They also have some affiliation or collaboration with some companies that provide medicare plans. I found a great deal for this kind of insurance from https://www.medisupps.com/medicare-supplement-plans/medicare-supplement-plans-2022/. I also believe that the answer to your question is in Episode 256 of the Ask a Cycling Coach Podcast!

If my insurance company saw me after doing a typical TR workout, dripping, 1 beat away from cardiac arrest and speaking in tongues, Iā€™m pretty sure they would double my rates.

This was me yesterday. Someone added too much lip to an old jump

In which countries is such kind of reimbursememt possible. In Switzerland itā€™s a joke, you only get a reimbursement, if you send in the receipt of your gym subscription. But insurance companies will never ever check how healty you are, or even if you go to the gym once a year.

Not sure if wrong other than on the only Medicare part.

One of my partners former jobs insurance plans would pay for peoples gym membership if they were over a certain BMI. Her boss, circuit court judge making 6 figures, had his gym membership paid for since he was obese. Her, law clerk making sub 50k but near low end of ā€œnormalā€ BMI, not covered. I think he had some extra ā€œexecutiveā€ perks and hers would only have been partially covered if she was obese vs his being fully covered but still it penalized the people already going to the gym and healthy.

From what I remember, you can only get reimbursed for a TR workout if you have medical insurance. Or at least this is what I was told when I asked about it. I can only recommend addressing your insurance company for such a question. Or you can address it to a lawyer. They can find a way for it to work even if it is not supposed to. I remember my lawyer from Medical Malpractice - Charlotte Personal Injury Lawyer had helped me solve a big medical finance problem after a nasty incident. If you donā€™t have a lawyer, I totally recommend giving them a call.

If you have health insurance through work, you might be able to get reimbursed for the cost of TR. It worked for me.

My insurance company, Empire Blue Cross, has always had a gym reimbursement feature. But during the pandemic, they expanded this to include virtual exercise programs and apps. They specifically mention Peloton as qualifying, so I tried TR.

Empire Blue Cross makes the reimbursement process a pain, but itā€™s worth it. The forms are so hard to find that I had to contact my employerā€™s HR dept. for help. Youā€™ll need an invoice for your payments from the TR help desk and proof that you exercised. I used screenshots of my TR calendar.

Hope this helps somebody!
