How do you know when you've had enough?

Came across this video that encapsulates some semi-rhetorical questions I’ve been asking myself for a while. Namely:

  • What are your long term goals for training?
  • How do you figure out how far you want to go?
  • How do you know when you’ve had enough?
  • What do you do then?

I really appreciate the reflections in this Mark Lewis video. I think he frames the discussion nicely. I’m curious how others answer these kinds of questions.

Personally, I’m still chasing the dream of becoming ‘above average’ in some way, shape, or form. I’m only in year three of structured training, but still have serious ambition and motivation to raise my FTP and race performance as far as it can go. I’ve been doing LV plans so far. Currently thinking about creeping closer to a MV plan in terms of volume this year, but just don’t foresee a day where I’d be willing or able to make the time commitment (plus trade offs) required for HV training.
