Hate ERG mode, ride a lot outdoors too. Would I be able to take advantage of TR’s latest features?
You can do TR workouts in resistance mode too
I totally get that, ERG mode isn’t for everyone, especially if you love riding outside! As for TR’s latest features, you can definitely make the most of them. They’ve got some great options for outdoor rides and tracking your progress.
On a Kickr Smart bike?
Will that FTP estimation work?
Yes, it works fine.
No TR feature is tied to ERG mode, period.
Personally I like ERG mode for most workouts, especially if they have longer, sustained intervals. But that’s because I just really suck at maintaining an even power level, even inside. However, if you’re not like me and can keep your power levels fairly even, you can absolutely make use of TrainerRoad workouts in “slope” or manual resistance mode. Some would argue that you’ll actually even get more out of the workouts. TrainerRoad guru Coach @Jonathan Lee has said many times on the AACC podcast that he does almost all of his workouts this way.
If you have a Kickr bike just use standard mode. Very similar to riding outside. I prefer that for pretty much anything sweet spot or above.
Does the power meter on your bike and your Kickr bike read the same? If they don’t, you may have confusing data that will be hard for TR to parse correctly.
