In the market for a dream aero bike. What to buy?

It’s almost decision time, I’m pretty sure I’ll go for the

Cervélo S5 (in the 2020 color black with white letters)
With the P5 aero bottle
Sram Force eTap AXS 1x12
48T aero blade up front, 10-33 at the back
Aero thru axls
Stealth Shadow 65mm wheels in black
Continental GP5000TL

Grand total of €8050

This seems to be the perfect bike for me

Any thoughts before I order?

Mother-in-law just got the S5 (mechanical Ultegra) and she absolutely loves it. Stunning bike. Enjoy!

Hambini (check youtube) is not a fan of Cervelo. But he also doesnt like Trek, Cannondale, Spesh, Canyon…so there are not many brands left haha

I think all these were mentioned before but I would check the following:

Specialized Venge
Canyon Aeroad
Trek Madone
Cannondale SystemSix
Bianchi Oltre

So basically every aero bike a part from the one he wants?

I didn’t list the S5 because he is already checking that one…

The 3t Strada if aero is everything. Also it’s designed for 1x I believe. Second to that would be an S5 or Venge.

But can I get a 3T Strada with a fully integrated cockpit?

That just limits your ability to get something that fits correctly and maintain an aero position. Also does the stock option fit you optimally?

What if your position/flexibility changes in future, will you stick with the integrated cockpit for the sake of a couple of watts?

Personally I’m an outlier as I have a 14cm, -17 stem and 38cm bars.

Even integrated cockpits can be raised with spacers, reach can be taken from my current bike and I can choose my own width. Worst case scenario I get another cockpit, no? Or am I missing something.

Update on the decision process, probably still going for the S5 despite the video which points out the harmful inside stopper. I suppose they have a long warranty anyways.

Just ran into a cycling mate of mine here on holiday, total coincidence, who says the S5 is the best bike he ever owned. Beside the (interesting) above video and Hambini (and their commenters) everyone seems to be very positive about the S5.

Rode with someone last year who got a new S5 and likes it a lot. Definitely would be on my shortlist if I had the cash for it.

I had a similar conundrum after putting my foot through the rear seat stay of my Focus Izalco Pro :sob:

Have had a BMC Timemachine Road on order for 8 weeks - been rocking ‘Frankenbike’ (i.e whatever bits I could find in the shed to scrape together the resemblance of a bike…) on the local club runs and very much looking forward to picking it up on Tuesday!

From my research, there is little difference for mere mortals like me… I went for the BMC on the basis it is slightly more compliant than something like a Venge. I tend to enjoy the longer week long European raids in the summer and 300km+ sportives so the small aero saving over long days in the saddle can be measureable.

Best of luck, if it brings you enjoyment it’s the best one for you.

Parlee

I bet all the top frames are within a couple watts, the difference will be in wheels and the position you get in on them.

That being said dream bike could only be a Bianchi Oltre disc, but that’s cos I’m a certified Bianchi fan.

Enjoy the S5D.

I have the 2019 version and i enjoy it. Coming from a Giant TCR, I can feel the aero benefits from the S5 and surprisingly the ride is more comfy versus the TCR (2010 model) The fact it can fit wider tyres up to 30mm allow you to tune your ride. The BB is plenty stiff and you will notice it from the first pedal stroke.

As for the video on the S5, i take it as educational information for S5D owners of what not to do to the bike. You wont slam the handle bars to the extreme left or right during a ride, even on tight corners i am not even reaching the limits of the bike turning angle.

I have logged more than 1000kms and the bike is still riding great.
