Joint Pain During Recovery Week

I’ve noticed this in the past, just wondering if it is me or is this a common occurrence? During a recovery week, my joints/tendons/ligaments seem to ache more than during training. Not really my joints, more the muscle connecting to the joints, specifically around the insides of my knees and around the calf/Achilles area. These areas can sometimes be “tender” during training, especially after over/unders or VO2 max workouts. Getting some soreness during my recovery week. Just doing 1hr endurance PL1.5 rides at the moment. Feel ok on the bike, but after getting these aches and pains around the joints. Is this just a me thing?

@MeMeToo, I’m 41. My bike fit is pretty dialed. I would say I get more misc joint pain from the trainer and a lot less from outside riding. Probably just more static position on the trainer. But also, I should say, since Oct I’ve been increasing my weekly TSS to around 350-400 (7.5 hrs) which is where I want to try and keep it this year. I’m focusing on shorter 45min-1 hr XCO races this year, so trying to do more intensity and less long rides. Going to experiment with very few training rides over 90 mins. May do a volume block, but more just experiementing around with how my body responds to less volume.

Also, should add, I’m not great at stretching. Do you think adding more stretching would help? I’ve had issues in the past were I actually make things worse by stretching. But maybe I just need to ease into it a bit more. I do foam roll quads, butt, and calves even on rest days.

I get that also if I’m off the bike for more than a few days. It’s more of a stiffness that a short 15 min spin will fix. Being older than you my body needs a daily lube.

There’s a lot to be said about that. If I take time off I get stiffer, joints hurt more, and my attitude gets saltier. I’m addicted to the motion and endorphins and miss the movement. Keep moving the meat. Walk, jog, get some exercise. Cross train. Keep the joints lubed through motion…
