Last Criterium Race-Want Upgrade Points

I need 5 more points for a cat 1 upgrade. Except for 2 points all were achieved this season. The P1/2/3 is before the 2/3. Points do not start to drop off until this time next year so no huge pressure, however, racing for me next year will probably not happen due to a career change.

Why bother? Sort of a bucket list type thing I guess. I was convinced I was old 15 years ago at 40 and have raced masters almost exclusively since. By chance helping younger team mates I started accumulating points this year and decided to try to upgrade this past summer.

Normally, I wouldn’t hesitate to race both but, I think chances are better in the 2/3. Fields in both will be small with numbers between 21 and 49 starters. Therfore, points will be 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th respectively.

So would you race both or be fresher for the 2/3?

  • Cat 2/3 only
  • Both

If you really want to get the points, the the 2/3 race is the obvious answer….just make irked is large enough to have upgrade points.

Leaning this way but, conversely even 1 or 2 points in the first race would make the 2/3 easier to finish it off. I realize this is an exercise in futility as countless variables are in play. Just wondered how others would race…

Register for both, see how you feel the day of.

I get better results when I race with lowered self imposed expectations

I’d race both and go all in on the first one and then probably get a better result in the second😂

Yes, Registered for both.

I’ve done the same as well.

The difference in fitness is very wide in the 1/2/3 and somewhat tighter in the 2/3 which tends to create a different race. The 1/2/3 has a good chance of a small break making it while the 2/3 will most likely be a bunch sprint. I’m no sprinter and getting in a break with kids (stronger riders) is all about how I follow wheels into the break. Not luck per se but, I will need to be in the right spot at the right time. The course is not technical so it’s too easy for less fit guys to get in the way later in the game. Hopefully the wind will kick up…

Lucky to race so looking forward to the day either way.

In my experience it was easier to get upgrade points in the 123 fields for this reason

There is more team cohesion and breaks stick much more often. As a masters racer who was unwilling to mix it up in bunch sprints, breakaways were my best bet. Giving up on 23 fields and figuring out team dynamics for the 1s was much more productive for me
