Lots of repeated workouts with the new plan builder

The new plan builder (which I set to a generic ‘Increasing FTP’ goal) repeats workouts a lot. For example:

  • next week (last week of the ‘Base 2’ phase) it is giving me Fayette back to back
  • the next three weeks are identical in that they consist of Kogel, Manly, Seneca Rocks, and then an O/U style threshold workout with a more challenging workout level each week
  • the week after that, we’re back to Fayette x 2 Townsend

Why is plan builder so repetitive and uninspired?

  1. Something might have gone wrong and one of the TR staff that post here might see this thread and take a look at it to check.

  2. Adaptions might be applied to the rides planned for future weeks based on your feedback at the end of each workout and your progress.

  3. You can swap any ride out manually at will.

The above is correct. Others have asked this same question and TR employees have replied saying the workouts will change as you progress, but you could ask support to look at your plan and make sure nothing went wrong.

I believe that the workouts in the next phase will adapt once you start that phase down the road.

We’re looking into this further though just to make sure there’s no funny business going on.

Kinda interested to see what this looks like. Can you post a screen shot?

There is no way this is what’s going on here but on a side note, I know many coaches that work in micro cycles where athletes will do the same thing two weeks in a row (or some do a repeating 14 week cycle) before moving on to the next block of training.

I had a near identical experience, set up a generic “increasing FTP” goal with the new builder and got identical hard workouts (VO2 and threshold) for 3 weeks. Weirdly the VO2 that repeated was a “stretch” workouts well above my current PL. During the rest week before this block, adaptations kicked in and changed everything to more reasonable and progressing workouts. I don’t know why I got this sequence of events, but seems like it eventually works out?

(Pun unintended but I stand by it.)

Since someone asked, here’s the currently scheduled block after my next rest week. 3x Diamond-1, 3x Tallac-2, 2x King, and the VO2 rides are about as close to identical as can be. Based on my recent experience, I expect this to be adapted to different and progressing workouts during the upcoming rest week, but it’s a weird way to do it. @eddiegrinwald any thoughts on why plan builder is scheduling this way?

My new plan is similar. There are repeating workouts, but they’re pretty far out in the plan. At this point I’m not worried about it and assume the plan will adapt as I get closer.

There’s a 99.99999% chance those will adapt (change) once you start the plan.

I don’t have a specific reason, but we do have a report written up for this.

Again, those workouts should adapt when you enter that phase, but there is still some confusion around why similar/duplicate workouts are recycled in future phases like this.

We’re discussing this internally now, and we’ll come up with a solution ASAP! :technologist:

Huh, I’m seeing this as well (mainly on Thursday workouts and some of the Monday workouts):

Comparing the Saturday and Thursday workouts, it’s like the plan assumes by default that I’ll progress from Threshold 4.0 to 4.5 over those three weeks, but I’ll be at Sweet Spot 6.0 the entire time. They do seem to adapt once I get in that phase, and depending on my survey responses, though, but it seems the starting point for a phase is missing the progression on certain days.
