Maltodextrin / Fructose Ratios

table sugar. 1:1. easy peasy.

Wouldn’t table sugar be 1:1 Glucose/Fructose?

Yes, that’s the point. Malto = Glucose (or rather breaks down into Glucose), so table sugar is pretty much the same thing as a 1:1 Malto/Fructose mix, just cheaper. The issue is if the sweetness bothers you.

His app doesn’t break down ratios though?

Not at the moment, but I think they are working on that for an update. I just use maltodextrin most of the time. But you could just split the total carbs needed by the fraction of glucose to fructose.

For races/ events, I’ve transitioned to 4:3 ratio, just because it’s convenient really 500ml bottle is 40g malto, 30g fructose.

Apart from in the lead up to season/ training the gut (not that I’ve really had issue), I’ve tended to just use malto as it’s cheaper. Last order was a black friday on myprotein at €2.78 for 5kg!

Fructose has been harder to get post-brexit, so it’s now health food shops. Still cheaper than buying a branded mix.

I used to mix it in advance, but now I prefer to do it each bottle (with a scoop of electrolyte). Malto I put in a tub, fructose comes in 500g bags, electrolyte is a small bag.

Yeah, I made the request a few months ago. Still doesn’t address OP’s original question though.

Have a look at @Dr_Alex_Harrison’s Youtube channel. He has lots of in-depth content and some short explainers. Probably you want to watch this one on monosaccharides (i. e. simple sugars) and this one where Alex analyzes Podlogar’s study that was financed by TR.

For this season I have switched to a homemade dextrose-fructose mixture (1-to-0.8). I put in a bit of salt and some lime juice for flavor. It is by far the least sweet energy drink and I also like the taste so far. Dead easy to make, too. Just keep one or two of your tubs from SIS et al.

Very familiar with Alex’s work. Use his app and have picked his brain on several occasions. My response was to the commenters suggestion that his app addresses mixing ratios- which it does not.

If that is your preferred ratio, there is no need to buy fructose anyway.

Just use 60g sugar plus 10g malto. 40:30 glucose:fructose.

It actually still works out cheaper doing malto/ fructose, at least here in Ireland.

Oh really?
Over here sugar is like € 1,- / kg , malto € 3,- / kg, and fructose more like € 5,- / kg (and a lot harder to find without shipping costs, unlike malto and sugar).

Table/ Granulated sugar (in supermarket) is circa €1.30 - 1.40 per kg, fructose €0.64 per kg, and my last order of malto* was €0.06 per kg!

*admittedly a very good black Friday price, but even at regular discounted prices €0.18 per kg

That’s incredible pricing on malto. Is Ireland the maltodextrin capital of the world or something? That’s basically free!

I couldn’t believe it so I looked it up and apparently maltodextrin is insanely cheap in the UK. 100% Maltodextrin Carbs | MYPROTEIN™

It’s a shame I can’t buy it from where I live, it sends me to the local myprotein website where it costs 8€ per kg…
