Marmotte Granfondo Alpes 2024

I think the weather is extremely unpredictable. Yesterday it was sun and today it is terrible with rain and 20 degrees. We just have to cross fingers i think.
They are working on galibier to open, also the tour is coming 2 days after us so i think they will do the best they can. Otherwise there is a tunnel through only a couple of km before.
But i have heard roumours that they might change the date to saturday instead of sunday, because of election in france and therefore its not possible to close the roads sunday. That i guess would be bad for alot of athletes. Luckely i am also arrigving monday. @gino3004 which climbs are you thinking of riding before?

That would suck as I arrive on Saturday afternoon… I would hope they would announce a date change soon enough so o could make sure I can arrive on Friday… But let’s just hope that the next days are warm and sunny enough so they get everything open…

@arthurdaly nice seems you are ready. Really hope that your flight is not cancelled and everything works out. I didn’t manage to get to my goal weight. A good 2kg over where I wanted to be… But my latest longer efforts are looking good. Still the taper will make me a bit antsy but I know that it will improve my performance in the end…

Oh that could be a disaster for some people if event is on the Saturday. Last year they issued an email on the 20th with confirmation of event route, details etc so should expect that soon.

Really hope it is a sunshine day . Keep us updated conditions from early next week :hand_with_index_finger_and_thumb_crossed:

2kg shouldn’t be make or break. Yes, the taper is difficult but you just need to trust all the training in the past months and hope for the fresh legs on the day

If flight is cancelled I will sign up for Marmotte Pyrenees.

That means you’ll arrive friday morning in France or the morning of the event?

Arriving Friday morning in France. Not ideal but feel sorry for anyone scheduled to arrive on the Saturday and can’t change.

Good luck to those of you doing it!

Sucks about the date change - I’d have been STRESSED if this was last year and our bikes etc not arriving till 1am on the Sat morn

I’m more stressed about the fact that the 10-36 axs force cassette I ordered a couple of months ago doesn’t fit my axs force derailleur. Hopefully a 10-33 will arrive in time

Am I seeing the weather forecast correctly (fine grained forecasts aren’t out yet only Europe wide)and it could even be a bit chilly, especially in the morning?

From what i can see now is about 16C/60F in the night, rising to about 20C/68F in the morning and 24C/75F in the afternoon. Also quite a bit of rain, but in the Alpes it’s difficult to predict rain for the next day, so 5 days out, could change a lot.

I would take that any day over what we had last year.

Yeah depending on the site, it is somewhere between 25-30C in the afternoon and around 16 in the night / early morning, Currently most forcasts seem to indicate thunderstorms in the afternoon, but like @PhydomiR said, predicting Rain 5 days out if the weather is not super stable is basically impossible. Also looks to be pretty humid so even if it is not that hot (and probably cloud cover so with any luck no direct sun exposure) you still could get hot up the alp…

Let’s see I think you can’t really tell how the weather will look until Thursday/Friday as currently the weather in the Alpes is super unstable…

And I’ve been riding in even more than my full winter gear for the last 2 weeks. I think most people thought I was crazy :joy:

I’ve spent years acclimatizing to cool rainy conditions, its finally paid off in an overseas event

Any danger it will be cancelled? Pics I’ve see from Galibier were pretty poor visibilty and forecast is thunderstorms and rain.

I doubt it gets cancelled because of the weather unless it is a huge storm… Having rain and thunderstorms is not that uncommon on the Alpes. At least here in Switzerland the events on the Alpes are going through even with heavy rain and low visibility. And from the forecasts it doesnt look to bad, but again that can change on the next days.

Had a bit of a cold the last 2 fays… Today I’m feeling good again will see how I feel later and decide if o rode today.
