Marmotte Granfondo Alpes 2024

Alpen Challenge was cancelled, no? And they shortened even the Tour de Suisse and they are pros.

Yeah but for the alpen challenge it snowed pretty heavy on the Albula. At the TDS Nufenen and Furka were still full of snow and werent able to be cleared. As it looks now Saturday will be pretty warm so snow shouldn’t be a problem, but with the current weather you never know…

Hello

Does anyone know the difference between the green and orange numbers?

Greetz

Hello,
I guess is about the start times and the categorization was done by the finish time estimation.

  1. Horaires de départ
Les départs se feront depuis Bourg d’Oisans aux moments suivants :
    Granfondo (Samedi 29/06)

    Vague 1 (VERT & ORANGE) – 7h00
    Vague 2 (BLEU) – 7h20
    Vague 3 (ROUGE) – 7h40

Around 3.9W/kg what would be a ballpark finish time and can you change your estimation?

I’m around the same w/kg according to my windsock it will take around 8:15 , add probably 10m stopping minus the glandon so around 8h official tome, but only with a good day.
I think it is to late to change target time because the e-tickets are out and your starting group is assigned

A few days ago I saw on the website how/where/when (I know it’s today) to get the starting number but I really cannot find that info again

Found it, at the bottom of the page

Yes i know, but green & orange start together then? but then why the colour difference

I’m not sure i 100% correctly remember, but i think green was like a priority box and orange is the normal start box (other the other way around). But your time doesn’t start until you roll over the start timing so it doesn’t really matter that much.

It has to do with the “grid” they just have to split in the group in different groups logistically in the starting town. The different groups have slightly different routes through town and different starting boxes. Has to do with available space in the relatively small town.

I’m glad I took your advice and got a 10-33 (36 is incomparable with my derailleur unfortunately) but I am already glad I didn’t come with a 10-28

So bike is ready for the trip new chain and brakepads and mostly clean.
Looks like the weather shouldn’t be to bad thunderstorms in the afternoon but wouldn’t say no to a cooling rain up the Alp… Still will be relatively cold on the galibier but should be good temps for climbing.

Need to make my gels this evening and then everything is ready to go… Starting on the blue group.

Another small practical question. Can we get water and suntan lotion (i got a slight burn on my left arm because apparently the sleeve of the jersey I wore today was slightly shorter than my regular jerseys) and how often?

3.9w/kg FTP? Or on thé climbs. I ride 8h in Marmotte (full race time with Glandon downhill included). FTP around 3.7…

I am dutch, so I never climbed before (until today up the Alpe d’Huez)…3.9 is according to wko5

Just ride smart and don’t blow up you will do great with a great time!

I don’t know if they had sunlotion last year at the official stops, though to be fair I had private stops trough tour operator which did have sunlotion.

Water is available rather frequently. One small tip, in at the bottom of the Telegraphe (in St-Michel-de-Maurienne) is a big stop which can get very busy, however, if water is all you need there is fountain just a bit further up the road right before crossing the highway just before the true start of the climb Google Maps location

I’m a bit in doubt about which size drink bottles to bring, 950 or 750 ml. I have Sis beta fuel drink sachets which should be mixed into 600ml bottles. I don’t mind diluting a bit more but my stomach definitely won’t be able to handle 2x80g in the 950ml bottle and I am afraid half sachets will quickly clump

What i did last year was ride with two 950ML bottles. At the start, both were filled with 80g of drink mix. Finished the first bottle up the first climb. On the top of Croix-de-Fer (Gladon this year) i filled that empty bottle with plain water and drank half the water bottle, half the mix bottle an hour after that. Took some extra water on top of Telegraphe and full restock on Galibier (maurten 320 in one bottle). Then restock at bottom of Alpe. Also took a SiS Beta Fuel gel each hour to get to about 80gs of carbs an hour.

If it’s as hot as last year up the Alpe. I would keep one bottle for cooling and fill it with mountain water coming down the Alpe.
