I’m at a hotel with a Peloton bike and going to use it later today.
Should I create a free account? What do you get with a free account? I think this has been posted on the forum but couldn’t find the answer doing a quick search.

According to this, the free trial is 30 days, you get everything, no need for a payment option
I am presuming that a free account is the same as a free trial ???
Hotel peloton bikes should allow you to use them as guest user. Caveat, I have always logged in with my account and have not tried to do it myself.
When picking a class, if you want structured training, look for Power Zone training with either Matt Wilpers or Dennis Morton. Otherwise, you’re going to get more of a Spin Class party atmosphere, which is fine if that’s what you want.
I did this a few weeks ago. If you create your account on the hotel’s bike it lets you continue to use the same account on hotel bikes.
I also did this a few weeks or month ago.
I created a free account and it allowed me to use it on the bike without issue.
Afterwards I had an email to activate a free 30 day trial but I never used it.
I travel a lot and setup a free Peloton account years ago. Not sure if it is the same now but I can still log onto a Peloton at a hotel to ride. I cannot access onepeloton.com or logon to someone’s personal Peloton. Exporting my rides from Strava has no HR or power data, so I dual record at least HR on my watch.
As for my rides I rearrange my calendar to do the Z2 / endurance rides at the hotel. I save the intervals for my bike / trainer / fan. The lack of cooling really gets to me and I sweat a lot, so hydration also becomes an issue. I try to do these rides fasted but do put 1000mg of electrolytes in a 1L bottle, and easily go through that in 60-90 minutes. I typically have a gel or two with me in case I start to bonk. Since I can’t ride shirtless I wear a short sleeve, lightweight jersey and unzip it all the way. I’ve also tried just wearing a base layer but prefer the unzipped jersey.
I do have a couple of week-long trips coming up and likely need to change my approach, though, to do some intervals on a Peloton.
Oh yeah, and before I forget, Peloton has a hotel bike finder tool.
One big problem with the power zone rides is that your “FTP” on a Peloton is no where near accurate to your actual FTP. They are otherwise decent if you have time to do an “FTP” test to find your Peloton FTP.
If you’re in a hotel and only have time for a single workout, I would instead suggest the “Pro Rider” rides where Christian Vande Velde is the guest instructor.
Agreed, and as is well documented by @dcrainmaker and others, Peloton and other spin bikes don’t report power accurately. I do my Z2 rides based on heart rate and RPE. I had one experience where the bike was reporting sweet spot power for me but was clearly in the endurance zone. At least I’m high up on the leaderboard, but now makes all my other rides comparatively slow.
Thanks, I did two easy “eye candy” rides last night (Puerto Rico and Scotland). After the first ride I figured out how to sync to Strava. During the second ride I figured out how to get Apple Watch to send HR data. After the second ride I figured out how to set HRmax and FTP. Pretty sweet. Oh, and my HR zones are good but it was late so I kept it chill.
Actually, Ray says the newer Peloton bikes are pretty accurate. The original ones were a shitshow that was easily manipulated. Having said that, when I traveled a lot and used hotel bikes, I always took my Assioma pedals with me and recorded with those and I didn’t think to mention that. Big oops!
So easy to use HR zones and toss in a couple hard pushes. Not going to bother traveling with my power pedals unless I’m slapping them on a rental bike.
Yeah, I used to travel a ton, and usually to the same hotels, so it was just part of the routine.
FWIW my power-to-HR seemed normal. RPE was higher but the fit was off, it was almost midnight, and it was warm in the fitness room because my wife and two daughters were in there working out.
I was on a trip a couple of months ago and my whole team was in the workout room in the morning before our first day of meetings. Even though I dropped the A/C to as low as it would go, it essentially turned into a sauna by the end, complete with moisture on the mirrors and everything. Heat training … in February … in New England!
If anyone is taking power pedals to use on a peloton, consider a Smartspin2K. It’s a device that can mount on the resistance knob and control the resistance based on the power from the pedals and using swift or TrainerRoad or similar apps. I have turned my peloton at home into a smart bike. I use it with TrainerRoad all the time
It’s an open-source project so you can source and build one yourself or some of the people involved in the development (not me) also sell them pre-made. They apparently also work with various spin bikes.
Oddly my wife’s peloton is within 5 watts of my Assioma’s. Well within 2%.
If you like the pro rides, George did some too
WATCH OUT @WindWarrior !!
Peloton can be good training, but sounds like it can also be a real pain in the arse.
