Is there anything planned method for syncing Peloton rides to TR considering Strava’s recent announcement of API changes? I travel frequently for work and the Peloton found in many hotel gyms is my one saving grace for staying in shape. I realize this is probably low on the totem pole, as it’s a small fragment of your userbase.
Did Strava kill the Pelton API or is that just part of the rumors on their changes?
We don’t have any plans for this at the moment. If we have any updates in the future, we’ll be sure to post about them here!
I don’t know if they fixed it, but Peloton rides wouldn’t go to Connect, with Connect saying the ride couldn’t be loaded due to some bizarre syntax issue. Garmin should know, they created the ‘language’. I think they do go to Connect through Strava, but that might not work now. Peloton needs to look at what they are putting out that is nonstandard in their data files.
There was a Python script that massaged Peloton files for being input into Connect, and it looked like it was dropping the degree of precision they used for power/cadence/etc, but it’s been a few years since I looked into that.
Being ‘cleaned’ by Strava (if it still works) and input into Connect might mean the data might be able to be imported by other apps?
This is why I think Peloton is the massive app DCR was hinting at that has a massive issue with the API changes.
I’ll have to watch it again, but I did get into it a little with Garmin support as to what Connect was having issues with. They could look at the server logs for my account and see that there were ‘several’ issues that the preprocessor identified when it refused the file. The rep didn’t want to get into it at the time, but said that it was something that could be fixed in the source file, insinuating that Peloton also uses ‘to many words’ in their output.
Then I went to Peloton, and got the ‘Well, that’s not our problem. We follow what they laid out as the way to do the files’, which is not obviously true… Fingers pointing every which way…
I was referring to this post, if you haven’t seen it already
Peloton is an ‘absolutely massive app’? Could it be Connect?
Do you think it’s not? According to this, in Q2 they had 3 million active subscribers and generated $750 million in revenue.
Hmm, maybe. Most of the people I followed in my Peloton days have gone AWOL, and haven’t posted a ride in at least 2 years. I culled a bunch of them earlier this year.
Every couple months I seem to get a new follower, which is odd since I too went AWOL only riding a couple of days for fill in while on vaca. Some of their churn was rather shocking. People on for a week or month, then disappearing. (I figured they returned their bikes somehow) Could be. Several of my wife’s friends and coworkers sprung for their bikes and some even for their treadmills too. I hope Peloton survives, but their churn must be pretty large over time. It would be interesting looking at the stats…
But if their numbers are that large, that would probably be it.
I doubt even Strava would be daft enough to get into an API fight with Garmin.
But you never know…
