My right favero assioma pedal bearing are very worn, how bad is it to continue riding until replacement bearings arrive?
(edit to answer my own question because curiosity got hold of me, the answer is bad really really bad, 2 bearings were completely destroyed and I really mean destroyed not badly worn, fortunately the spindle seems okay, not to sure about the pedal body
edit 2; yes unfortunately there appears to be some damage as parts of the bearing have bitten themselves into the plastic)
Yeah, I destroyed the bearings in a pair of SpeedPlay pedals. They were completely rusted and seized up. The spindle had slight grooves in them. I ended up lucking out, found replacement bearings at a local ābearing storeā and the LBS had a ājunk boxā that turned out to have a pair of usable SpeedPlay spindles. (Then the post-buyout cleats started rusting out, so I dropped that pedal brand) but the mess was epic, and even though the plastic pedal shell was fine, I never used those pedals after that. Their single o-ring bearing seal was a joke. I swapped back to SPD-SL and so far Happy Days.
Good luck with your Assiomas.
If you have, or can get, a dial caliper, Iād check the pedal body for roundness, and toss them if itās too bad.
If you need one, Iāve had one of these for well over a decade, and itās always spot on. Might be expensive, but worth every penny IMO.
Unfortunately they are way to expensive for that but I ordered replacement pedals because when I checked the other pedal the thread of the end cap stripped. Both pedal bodies started to look worn and itās only double the price of just bearingsā¦
Riding with worn bearings in an Assioma Duo/Uno pedal is really running the gauntlet. A mate here had one of his bearings sieze completely & as a result he was pulling shards out of his pedal body, & the inner surface of the bearing had worn down his spindle to the point that it was expected that replacement bearings would have an extremely short life. The best that Favero would do for him was offer a discount on a set of Unos. Donāt do it. Check the left pedal, its bearings could be on their way out too. if theyāre okay for now, you could unpair left from right (in the Assioma app), & run it as a single-sided PM with a standard Look Keo pedal on the right, just watch out for differences in pedal stack height that could introduce imbalances, but Iād replace all the bearings straight away.
Yeah thatās what happened to my right pedal, fortunately my spindle looked undamaged. The left side looked completely fine inside (except for the damaged thread for the end cap). And as I am one of those people that never throws anything away, I still had a set of old bearings lying around, hopefully they will hold out for another week until my new pedal bodies with new bearings arriveā¦
Edit: I really hadnāt noticed anything wrong with the bearings either. I only heard an occasional clicking sound but figured it was my cleats. And even with these destroyed bearings the span normally forwards, it was only spinning backwards that they seized up
It used to be Starrett and Mitutoyo, but Starrett has largely disappeared apparently.
Oh, Amazon has a Starrett caliper, but itās $50 more. shrug Itāll work, but Iāve always gone Mitutoyo. (I do have a decades old Starrett micrometer from my grandfather. It has the patent data on it, so it might be a collectors item? Still works 100%, solid mic)
The official bearing replacement set is pretty expensive (around 50 euros with shipping) for what it is (6 bearings, 2 nuts, 2 end caps, 2 washers) and itās usually just 1 or 2 bearings that wear out. Maybe Iāll buy a couple of bearings from bearing boys next time but I just ordered new pedal bodies and a new replacement bearing set and by the time these run out the pedals will 7-8 years old and perhaps need replacing anywayā¦
