Recommend me some TV series to watch

Ok it’s almost time to start structured training again and I need something to watch.

However, I literally haven’t watched any TV series at all in the past ~20 years. Breaking Bad? No. The Office? no. Assume I’ve been in a coma or prison.

I’m motivated to start catching up on cultural references I’ve been missing, so what’s good to watch while on the Trainer?

Breaking Bad is the best starting point…still the greatest series ever, IMO.

Follow that with:

  • Sopranos
  • Mad Men
  • Justified
  • The Americans

That is my current Top 5 Series of all time.

Long form, long story shows are the best. Want to spend more time on the trainer Breaking Bad will keep you there for sure. Working through the Sopranos this year myself. Peaky Blinders so far has the been best of all.

Important point…treat these series as something you will only watch on the trainer. It keeps you very motivated to not only get on the trainer, but also stay on longer…“Sure, I have another episode in me…cue it up!”

Apple TV+ is well worth the $7/mo. If you like sci fi, Foundation and For All Mankind are great.

Then there’s Ted Lasso for something lighter and really well done.

Second Deadwood, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones.

For sci fi I’d add The Expanse.

Ah crap…I forgot to add The Shield. That show will keep you entertained on the trainer for the entire winter…7 seasons and 20+ episodes / season, IIRC.

Would add The Wire

Breaking Bad is great. After that you can move on to Better Call Saul.

Since you’ve watching nothing, I’d just search for the highest rates shows on whatever platform you have access to and go from there.

If you loved Breaking Bad you’re gonna love Better Call Saul too.

Any recs for shows that aren’t so dark? I have hard time watching people murdered and dissolved in bath tubs while trying to do a workout on the trainer.

On another note… Ted Lasso was a great great series and definitely worth watching. But watching it back I find it more sad than “light and funny” (which was my first impression). The last season kinda missed the mark IMO.

Game of Thrones certainly, The Shield is good, Spooks if you can get it - although that’s a bit niche for the UK, Justified, The West wing - although it needs watching carefully, House of Cards, Wire in the Blood and Cracker - again UK shows so may not be available in the US - Peaky Blinders is excellent as is Line of Duty …the list is endless!

For me, comedy gets repetitive and dry after a bit and the episodes are usually short, so it’s hard to binge 4 episodes b2b2b.

The latest one I’ve watched was Barry. It was good. Russian Doll and Fleabag too.

Not a comedy, but The Bear is excellent without being all about violence.
