Yesterday while riding my H3 I heard a loud sudden cracking sound from within the trainer. After removing the side cover plate, I saw the drive pulley was cracked in four places and found two small shards of plastic broken off of it. Fortunately I could order a replacement drive pulley on Saris’ website and a Saris service rep emailed me replacement instructions.
Great to hear that you could get replacement parts! Better if it didn’t happen, but long term parts availability is important.
Make sure you take note of how far screwed in the tension bolt is. I replaced the pulley on mine and didn’t. It hasn’t been accurate since.
Thanks for your warning regarding the tension bolt.
The service manual Saris emailed me indicates the distance between the two washers on each end of the tension spring should be 3/4". On my H3 this distance measures 13/16".
As a follow-up to my original post. The new drive pulley arrived on-schedule and was easy to replace. Replacement took about 20 minutes and did not require special tools - no circlip pliers, no pulley puller, etc. I’ve been riding the trainer for over a week since replacing the drive pulley and it works fine.
