Semi-Aero Bottle Cages

Not the silly idea of putting an elite chrono on your road bike, but the new madone / propel cages that are starting to pop up on road bikes.

Hard to find any tests or reviews. They are usually a reasonable weight penalty (propel ones c.2-3x the weight of a good carbon cage).

Any aero tests hidden away that I’ve not seen?

How are they at holding bottles? Holding non-specific bottles?

Aerocoach suggested they weren’t really up to much. Elite bottles were a bigger benefit

Elite bottles are just better. Easy to squeeze. If you get their cages you will not lose a bottle even with the 950ml.

Link?

@TrekCentury

The propel cages take any bottles, elite included.

I have the new Trek ones and love them. They hold normal bottles just fine, I use the 950mL Elite bottles in them most days.

@Junk_Miles Did you ever consider the Cannondale ones for your SuperSix?

Not you Trekcentury, @bigred claiming that dan had said there was something wrong with the propel bottle cages.

Not really. It was partly by chance. I just happened to be in my shop one day and they had them for sale near the register and I have no control. I hadn’t really considered aero bottles but heard good things so I took the chance. The Cannondale ones, although I never tried them, I had heard were finicky to use and didn’t work well with other regular bottles. Just by the eye test, the Trek ones are more narrow and fill the triangle better so I figured they’d be more aero.

I use these and have never ejected one but I can eject an elite bottle just by looking at it while sipping coffee. I’m already silly AF so I’m not too worried about that.

It wasn’t Dan, it was Aerocoach (Xavier) on Escape Collective.

To paraphrase from memory… aero bottles are only a small benefit vs round bottles. For the newer types from Trek etc that can also take a round bottle, the aero benefit is tiny. The aero benefit from Elite Chronos is bigger (but still not massive).

I’ve listened to a few lately - was this the EC one where he suggested more benefit of going one bottle and/ or smaller bottle, as being a bigger benefit?
