It’s water resistance but not waterproof - will keep you relatively dry but it will feel dampish in a downpour. I use it as a rain jacket in warmer weather and the magic shell under 50 deg F for this purpose - both do a good job and are my jackets of choice
I’m pretty happy with the Pactimo Storm+. I too was looking for something in the middle, between a heavier soft shell and a lighter wind or rain shell. I love the pockets on the back. It fits snug, so no flapping in the wind.
As @jreinfeld said, it’s not going to keep you completely dry in a downpour, but in thick fog or light rain, I’ve never had an issue and it’s very breathable. It’s DEFINITELY not going to compete with a shakedry for rain, but I can’t wear a true raincoat on the bike. I overheat super fast. I bought a nice Rapha one and I’ve worn it once
Yep - match breathability with rain protection. I’ll take some rain protection and awesome breathability any day. Why these both work so well. Passes my downpour test for my needs. I don’t expect anything to keep me dry in a downpour
This is perfect…aero, narrow fit. Windtex Shield membrane in the front and on the long sleeves. Detachable sleeves to obtain a short sleeve jersey with windproof front protection and so on.
This is my mid season alternative to a jersey combined with base layer, arm-warmers and wind vest. I’m happy to have that as an option:
Came in to recommend the same thing. I’ve had mine for about 1.5 years and wear it quite often as the temperature range in the OP is pretty similar to the temps here during spring, early summer, and autumn.
It’s breathable, packs down nicely, and works nicely with layers. Lately, I’ve been keeping comfortably warm in ~7-10C with a thermal jersey and baselayer underneath.
Yeah, I normally can’t either…see my profile pic for the longest I ever wore mine - The Rift in Iceland. high-40’s to low 50’s the whole day with rain for much of it. Took the jacket off and back on a few times, but mostly kept it on.
Had a Castelli Perfetto SS jersey underneath with armwarmers. Had the rain not been as persistent, that would have been the perfect attire for the race at those temps.
I have a light thermal jersey that is wind resistant and mildly water resistant, but breathes very well, so I can wear it in the high thirties with gloves and arm warmers, and up to 55-60 F in zone 2. I think it’s the following one, but it is some sort of Castelli Thermal Jersey
It might be this one though
Whichever one it is, it is my favorite thing to wear when I’m out in the shoulder seasons.
You’re looking for a partial windstopper jacket. Windproof fabics don’t stretch. You want windproof front and arms, vented back.
Very wide temperature range:
Also a big fan of their race base layer for shoulder seasons. It’s very waffly.
That’s well into short sleeve jersey and shorts territory
Top off and arm warmers?
Isn’t that the marathon runner look these days?
I cant wear it over about 8 deg
The tricky part is “mid-season”, what that means differs a lot from person-to-person. If you live in the mountains, it might get cold at the top of a climb. Or do you just a wind stopper that you can put in your back pocket for when you need it? Some jackets like my 7Mesh Corsa work great when you are moving, but you quickly cool down when you stop. My Pearl Izumi softshell in contrast keeps me very warm, but is much bulkier. Do you actually need a jacket or would a jersey + warm base layer + arm warmers be enough?
Even on the same ride, in the same conditions you’ll notice riders need different clothing solutions. I like international events like Paris Brest Paris for observing this. You’ll have riders from hot countries wearing full leggings, multiple insulating layers, maybe a balaclava and full finger gloves. A Northern European riding next to them may be in short sleeve jersey, shorts, and fingerless gloves.
Ok so, my MAAP jacket is due for tomorrow, but I’m afraid I messed up,because it sounds like except for the non existing inside fleece liner it’s still a Polartec membrane. Hopefully it will be as efficient as my old glorious Jahabu5 from Assos, that was some jacket.
And sometimes you need to learn when and what for to use certain pieces of clothing. I have a weird Pearl Izumi “softshell” jacket (it was marketed as such, ugh), which I bought because I wanted to replace my favorite ever softshell jacket, a Pearl Izumi Pro from about 15 years ago. It is actually the inverse of a softshell jacket: it becomes almost transparent to the wind, but keeps me warm at rest.
Now this is useful in certain conditions. And combined with a windstopping layer, it actually keeps you quite warm.
I have some Primaloft Mitts. I wore them on a ride at -6C during a dry cold snap before Christmas. I was wearing them last Thursday during sleet, hail then rain at 1C. After 1.5 hours the hands were starting to chill. Swapped to my warmer and dry spare mitts for the second half of the ride.
Need to know what conditions your gear is good for as well. Gear may keep you warmer when cold and dry then when warmer (still cold) and wet.
Castelli Perfetto ROS jacket does me. If i can decipher the Castelli range i think this is a mid season jacket.
7 degrees and below - assos long sleeve early winter base layer underneath
8-11 degrees - assos spring fall long sleeve base layer under neath
12 degrees and up summer kit with a gilet
Im not sure what the purpose of a winter jacket is seeing as the mid season jacket i use goes down to low single figures. So in answer to your question mid season jackets are very useful, and this one doesnt flap about in the wind and fits fairly close. Mind you, id never be wearing it if it was 14 degrees.
