Should I buy a TT or an aero road helmet?

Hi all - I do sprint tris and am looking at a few aero upgrades. I’m not the best out there but did get an age group podium last season.

Currently on a Giant TCR road bike, last year I added aero bars and got a bike fit and they made a decent difference. I’m planning to get a TT bike in the coming months which hopefully will make a decent difference as well, but right now I’m thinking about an aero helmet.

I always thought TT helmets were a bit too expensive and I was all set to go with the S-Works Evade 3 aero road helmet, but at the moment the Rudy Project Wing TT helmet is virtually the same price due to Black Friday sales. I have a normal helmet which is fine for every day rides, so I’m only looking at one to use for racing.

Any thoughts? Will a TT helmet be noticeably faster? It’s only half an hour so I don’t think getting hot would be an issue. I like the idea of having a visor because I don’t ride in sunnies.

Any thoughts or advice welcome, thanks!

Yes, a TT helmet will be faster, especially if you are using a standard road helmet now.

Whether the Rudy is the right / fastest helmet is a different question. Helmets tend to be very individual. But again, compared to your current helmet, it will almost certainly be faster.

I think ERO did some testing on it and it tested well across a number of riders. May be worth a search on YouTube for the video.

ETA - found the video for you.

Thanks, that’s helpful. Good vid too!
Rudy (in Australia at least) offer prepaid returns so I think I’ll go for it.
Cheers

A good TT helmet will be significantly faster than a good aero helmet.
I’ve seen some wind tunnel tests and we’re talking about 15-20w at least

Hey thanks for that. Wow, so you’re saying a TT lid might save 15-20W over an aero road helmet - therefore even more over a standard road helmet? Good to know!

Yes, the difference between an aero helmet and a TT helmet is considerably bigger than the one between a normal road helmet and an aero helmet
