I have a couple of questions
i have a red drive train with 48/35 chainrings and a 10-33t cassette, which length of chain do i need to buy? there are some with 114 links some are longer.
secondly, I have a regular chain checker from lezyne. does it work with flat top chains or should i purchase the chain checker for flattop chain from sram?
my current chain shows 0.5 wear…but i am using a ‘normal’ chain checker. i wonder how accurate is that?
thank you.
A normal length chain will work for you.
I’m not sure what the ‘normal’ chain checker is, it would be best to be more specific about what you have.
This is from Sram showing compatable chain tools.
I have this one:
what is a normal chain length? 114 links?
i have 12 speed sram RED flat top chain
Doesn’t look like your Lezyne tool is on Sram’s list.
This should give you a ballpark number of links. I’d still size the chain based on Sram’s instructions.
I got n the AXS train pretty early on in 2019. At that time one of the few chain checkers for a Flattop chain was the Pedro’s which I bought and still use. Far as I can tell it works well as my drivetrain continues to be in great condition after more than 50K miles. I have since added two more AXS equipped bikes and am confident the tool I use will be all I will need. I would not recommend using a standard chain checker as the Flattop chain roller diameter is different from other chains. As for what length to purchase, buy what comes from SRAM, I have never seen different chain lengths available. Setting your length is very easy using the SRAM method of big ring and big cog not through the derailleur plus two links but this length depends not only on the cog and chainring size but on your particular bike’s chainstay length. Don’t worry too much, if you follow SRAM’s guideline for length you will not have problems and a 114 link chain will be easily long enough for most any road bike install. Best of luck.
