I’ve recently begun TrainerRoad about 2 weeks ago and like it very much.
One thing I’m confused by though, is when doing my daily rides if I should just run the suggested workout in calendar or if I should do the Trainnow suggested workouts.
I am training about 10-12 hours per week for Road Racing (cycling) and almost all my calendar rides are Endurance whereas the Trainnow workouts are Sweetspot and VO2 Max so it’s quite a contrast.
If you have a plan set up in your calendar for a specific goal, its generally best to stick to it. Train now gets you the best workout on a individual day but takes no account of the end goal, a plan in the calendar does.
As @HLaB said, the workouts on your TR Calendar will be part of a larger training plan.
TrainNow, on the other hand, will look at your recent training history to suggest a workout on a given day without any relation to a plan you may be following on your TR Calendar. It acts as more of a standalone workout if you have an extra day to train, for example.
I checked out your account and also noticed it looks like you had some previous training experience before starting up your current plan. Since you have some experience already, you may find that your default Progression Levels are a bit low for your current fitness capabilities. If your sessions at Workout Levels 1.X-2.X feel easier than you might want them to, I’d suggest using Workout Alternates or our Workout Library to search for replacement sessions at about Workout Level 3.X to jump ahead to something that might feel more appropriate for you.
Once you complete a workout at a higher level, your Progression Levels will update, and Adaptive Training will suggest adaptations to your plan that reflect the changes in your Progression Levels.
Hope that info helps out – feel free to let us know if you have any additional questions!
Thank you for the additional insights. I recently completed my 10th workout and was given a higher FTP level.
While I have you, I was wondering if there is a way to design a split in the Calendar for a morning and afternoon ride? Or if I just need to do an adjustment each time to change the 2 hour suggested workout to 1 hour and then do another 1 hour later in the day.
At the moment, you can’t schedule two-a- days or split a day’s training volume, with our Training Plans.
However, you could supplement the Training Plan with additional TrainNow Workouts. If you choose to take this approach, I suggest swapping to a lower volume Training Plan so that your scheduled Workouts are shorter. Then you could use TrainNow to supplement your Training Plan with additional Workouts.
As you’ve noticed, TrainNow serves you an Endurance, Climbing and Attacking Workout at your desired duration, for you to choose from. It uses AI to suggest workouts based on your current fitness level.
If you choose to do this, I suggest you choose to add Endurance Workouts, so that you don’t overdo it and impede your ability to consistently hit the harder Workouts.
I hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions for us .
