Stitches (breathing) - what are they & how to avoid them?

Hi all,

So with Vo2 max work, as I progress through the intervals in a workout, most of the time I’ll get a twinge under my right hand side rib cage which slowly progresses into a very uncomfortable stitch.

During the recovery valleys, although very painful and uncomfortable, deep breathes seems to help clear the stitch, only for it to return in the next interval.

Are some people more prone to getting them? I’m guessing as I tire and my breathing becomes more erratic (even if I try my best to keep to deep inhales and exhales), the shallower breathing only exasperates the stitch.

Does anybody have any tips to help avoid getting them, anything that’s worked for them?

Thanks
