I’m loving the new updates in the TR App, especially the way it recognises other types of training. That said, I am struggling to know what TSS to give my strength training workouts. Does any one know the best way to calculate the TSS for strength training?
TSS is not ment to be used to track something like weight training, I would not use it for anything but Cycling and running/swimming.
I dont use TSS for my strenght training. But im coming from a hockey/gym background so its not how I calculate “training stress” for that. Honestly i dont do anything more the a note of how I trained in the gym.
But I found this for you, maybe it helps.
Glad to hear you’ve been enjoying the recent updates!
As @Twowkg mentioned, TSS is a power-based metric used to quantify the amount of stress on the body from cycling activities. It’s calculated using Normalized Power, Intensity Factor, and time. Because of how TSS is calculated, it doesn’t work very well for quantifying stress from strength training.
If you haven’t tried it out already, perhaps you could look into adding “Working Sets” from your strength sessions to your TR Calendar. Working Sets pair up with Red Light Green Light to help you manage the fatigue/stress generated from those strength training days.
Here’s some more info on that if you’re interested:
Hope that helps – feel free to let me know if you have any additional questions!
Hi Zack,
I’ve been adding my working sets, but below wher you add that information it asks for the TSS Score, hence my original question.
Hmm, I haven’t seen anywhere where it asks athletes to enter TSS info when adding Working Sets. I can’t seem to find it anywhere looking for it right now either.
Here’s what I’m seeing when I add Working Sets:
If you are seeing an option to enter TSS, could you post a screenshot? I’d like to make sure everything is appearing as it should be – if it’s not, I’ll let the team that worked on this know if we have to make any changes.
I’ve been following intervals.icu process of including ATL to represent strain and required recovery, but only a small percentage of CTL.
I believe TrainingPeaks suggest applying a TSS score based on this formula, but I think it screws fitness too much.
I’ve personally set strength training to 20% fitness and 100% fatigue
