When I wear thin cycling socks, I sometimes get irritation in one spot on the top of my foot. I’ve found thicker socks (like wool winter socks for example) offer a bit more cushion but these won’t work when it starts getting warm outside again.
Any suggestions for thicker socks that might be suitable for summer riding?
Darn Tough socks. They have a lifetime warranty if they ever wear out. Their thicker socks are actually amazing in the summer because they are so good at sweat wicking. I used to run in the Texas heat and I’d get finished an my whole body/every article of clothing would be like I just stepped out of a pool, except my socks. More often than not, they would be nearly bone dry. I’d show my wife sometimes after a run and she’d be amazed. Granted, I’m not sure if cycling shoes would pull the sweat away quite like running shoes.
They have different thicknesses of socks. I have at least 20 pairs and since switching to them 6-7 years ago, I’ve only needed the warranty claim once.
Compare that to “Ornot” cycling socks, which I had two socks develop holes within a couple rides. They replaced the first under warranty, but after that I just didn’t bother.
Had great luck with all styles, from ankle to standard tube socks. I wear their tube socks with dress boots, steel toe boots, and cycling shoes! Very universal - just a standard mid-rise sock with excellent quality. I do have the ankle and dress-type socks as needed.
Their “standard” weight are great/universal for many uses.
+1 on the Darn Tough socks. That’s pretty much all I wear. Lots of different options, and I wear them all, just like @Trix8806 . They have different thicknesses including on the top and bottom, and I think I’ve only had one pair develop a hole after something like 15 years. I also wear them in hot and cold weather - different thickness ones.
I have had good luck with defeet Wooleator. It’s enough cushion on the top of my little toe to stop the pain that happens at around the 30 mile mark. Not overly hot for riding in Texas.
I also bought 10 pairs of Bassini Pongo socks during the going out of bussiness sale. These seem to be in between most aero socks and the defeet wooleators.
Smart wool socks are relatively thick and tend to be comfy short of high summer although the style is questionable. The Silca wool socks are also good and fit in smaller volume shoes thanks to the thinner heel material.
Yes, I prefer the low-top version, basically a little more height than the no-show. It’s also a holdover from when I was still running and I used what I had.
I would switch to cycling-specific socks if I found some with the same amount of cushion, and would be ok if they were a little higher.
